  Summary
In 1632 the Athenaeum Illustre was founded in Amsterdam to educate students in Trade and Philosophy. As the establishment was not a proper university yet, lessons were generally given at the professors' homes. Until the nineteenth small institution with no more than 1877, the situation changed when the Athenaeum Illustre became the Universiteit van Amsterdam and was permitted to confer the highest educational degrees.

  Language of instruction
All international programs are conducted in English. Non-native speakers are required to submit proof of proficiency in the English language before enrolling in any of these programs. A good indicator is a score of 550 or higher on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or a minimum score of 6.5 on the test of the English Language Testing Service (ELTS).
  Semesters/Dates
The academic year of the Universiteit van Amsterdam runs from the beginning of September until the end of June, and is divided into three trimesters. The first trimester runs from the beginning of September until the middle of December; the second from the beginning of January (a few courses start mid December) until the end of March; the third from the beginning of April until the end of June.

  Housing
The Housing Department of the Office of Foreign Relations administers the Oudezijds Kolk, the main guest-house for visiting lecturers and researchers, situated in downtown Amsterdam.
