Algiers: "Behind the politics there's a great country"

written: 07 August 2000
Due to political turmoil in the country, Algiers is viewed quite negatively. It's a pity because it's an interesting city with a mysterious mixture of east and west. It's got a vibrant cafe culture and the people are friendly. The waterfront is great and you can great seafood there. The best thing about Algiers is that it is a good base for exploring the rest of the country. Around Algiers there are unspoiled beaches, fabulous mountain ranges and Roman ruins. To the south lies the Sahara - it's just like the movies!

Pros: Amazing natural beauty; few tourists
Cons: Volatile politics
Rating: just a tip
Details: Ferry from France or Spain; Flights from France
