"Bad Boy Burgers Rules!!!!"

written: 26 December 2006
As a burger buff, it is a mission of mine to try every decent burger joint in my home town, Melbourne. Having experienced approximately 30 establishments over the last 12 months, without any doubt the WINNER IS BADBOY BURGERS in Richmond. True to the gourmet concept and intent on adhering to healthy values, every burger in Bad Boy's range is mind blowingly good. Very, Very strongly recommended.

Pros: The best burgers and friendliest service in Melb.
Cons: None!

"Indulge yourself in Japanese bentos for little money"

written: 20 September 2004
Lunchtime in Melbourne's CBD: Don't know where to get some good, inexpensive food? Try "Don Don" at Swanston corner Little Lonsdale, across QV/State Library. This busy little snack bar, easily overlooked, features one of the best o-bentos in town. You can have Sukiyaki, Teriyaki and Curry bentos, bentos with sashimi and also whole bento sets. You will love the way the staff - many of them Japanese who'll greet you with a loud "irashaimase" - arranges the dishes. Of course you can either eat in or have your bentos as take away. The taste is incredibly good, and it will cost you no more than an average 4$. After I found out about Don Don, I went there almost on a daily basis for nearly two months.

Pros: Fantastic Japanese bentos for a few bucks
Cons: Tables may be a bit filthy sometimes

"Want To Learn Vietnamese FREE!!"

written: 25 December 2001
On most weekends at this Buddist Temple there are free Vietnamese classes. The classes are mostly for children but are open to everybody. It is advertised in Vietnamese language newspapers. The temple is called Chua Quang Minh. I think it would be a great place to get some basic Vietnamese language skills before a trip to Vietnam and get to exposure to the Australian Vietnamses communitee.

If you're in Melbourne and looking for something alternative, catch a tram and make your way to Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. "Go West!"

written: 17 October 2001
If you are in Melbourne you cannot miss the chance to see the Great Ocean Road, an achingly beautiful coastal road west from Melbourne. If driving along a long and winding road doesn't appeal to you, but a ride on a minibus accompanied by cheesy theme songs, then look no further! Go West Tours definitely offers your money's worth. You also get to see kangaroos and koalas and if you're lucky, a snail or two! A full day tour for 54 AUD.

Pros: Beautiful scenery, kangaroos, koalas, funny songs

Here we have a cinema experience with a twist. An emergency in space unfolds and the audience takes control to make decisions on how to solve the problem by selecting options on a screen in front of them, the most popular selection is then played out on screen. A really cool change from just sitting and being taken for a ride....only goes for an hour and is really exciting!

"Melbourne "The most liveable city ""

written: 13 May 2001
Melbourne, The town above all I call home, prefers to reveal herself to you over time. Often passed over in favour of Sydney with its dramatic harbour and beaches is no less enchanting and to live for me, much more appealing. For a start the town is very European with its romantic slow moving trams and incredibly multicultural population. The cost of living is low and the emphasis is on lifestyle, unlike it's northern adversary the "financial capital". It is the art capital of Australia and this spills over into wonderful bohemian areas, with regular colourful festivals and street parades. The food in Melbourne is eclectic and inovative. Drawing influences from all over the world. Predominatly from the large Italian, Greek and Asian inhabitants. The culture is a "cafe culture" with a visitor finding it difficult to walk to more than a few steps without passing a buzzing street side cafe. Not to be outdone on the beach front, St Kilda is an amazing cultural melting pot, oozing with young fresh creativity, right on the harbour, and the spectacular beaches of the Great Ocean road are a mere hour from the city. My suggestion, give it the time and reap the rewards.

Pros: Too many to mention
Cons: Some of the outer suburbs are a little ugly.

If you are serious about going send me an inote or email and I will give you the information on where to find these jobs and I'll even contact them for you, I'm always willing to help my fellow travellers but you have to be serious, these are friends I've made who have helped me to survive.

"Don't go to Kingbilli Country Estate - Cottages"

written: 01 March 2001
I booked for a weekend at this property and had to leave after 24 hours and go and stay in a motel. I cooked two steaks on the Saturday night and the cottage filled up with blowflies and fumes. We could not see how they were getting in but it was revolting. We had to spray nearly a full can of fly spray into the room which resulted in dead and dying blowflies all around us while we ate dinner. They insist on no shoes inside the cottages - can you imagine stepping on dead blowflies in bare feet? How romantic! We could not breathe from the smoke and fumes and left to stay in a motel. I wrote to the owners and they ignored my letter. When my solicitor wrote to them they said "they could not be held responsible for the guest's enjoyment of the property". I have notified the Health Department and am proceeding with legal action. They have a website which is extremely flattering but this place is a total rip-off at $250 per night.

"Taska takes good food to task"

written: 25 February 2001
Taska Contemporary Asian cuisine, located in Malvern Rd, Glen Iris is one well kept secret. Cheap CHEAP food that is fresh and tasty is what you'll find in this simply decorated restaurant. Starters from $1.60 (aus), great soups from $4.95 (try the Tom Kar or the Red Curry - Delish) and mains from around $7 catering easily for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Some of the freshest & best curries I've had in a long while, delivered to you with a smile by the helpful staff - if you're low on cash - and want a tasty & very affordable meal - you can do A LOT worse than Taska.

Nothing is more relaxing (or as cheap) to do in Melbourne than stroll along St Kilda Beach and Pier. Footpaths make the walk easy although on busy nights you might be ducking from roller bladers and cyclists. "Watching the crowds go by..."

written: 18 February 2001
On a warm summers night St Kilda is the place to be seen and One Fitzroy Street is the place to be. Located on the corner of the Esplanade and Fitzroy St, you can view all there is to be seen including out into the bay. There is a range of food from pizzas, to pastas to salads and a reasonable wine menu. Kind of priced mid range. "The Birdcage"

written: 30 January 2001
If you are looking for a new drinks venue with tasty food on the side then try The Birdcage. They serve both hot and cold Japanese dishes as well as larger meals. While the "finger food" is not cheap (ranges from about $10-$16 a plate) when you are sharing with 4 or 5 others it works out quite reasonably. The restaurant is cosy (ie. not a lot of seating)and if you get there early enough you can grab the table by the window and watch Fitzroy St happenings. A must try!

"Pat the Possums"

written: 05 January 2001
If you like meeting furry little animals that you can get really close to.......then you should go to the Fitzroy Gardens at sunset or after. Take some bread or chips along (friut is best), to tempt the little furry guys. Hang around some big trees (shhhh be quiet!) near to some light and throw some food around you....wait. The possums should turn up soon. They are nocturnal and dont see very well is light, dont make sudden moves and they will approach you. "Creative food, cool tunes, beautiful night out"

written: 17 December 2000
i had heard quite a bit about this place, so i was expecting a lot when i went this past weekend. i was most certainly not disappointed! the menu was creative without being too scary, the wait staff were friendly and very efficient and almost laid-back in their crisp whites, the wine exquisite, and the music added the final touch of groove. if you shy away from those stuffy up-market type of restaurants for a special dinner, then this place is the alternative. you won't feel out of place if you're not in a suit, but the service you get will make you feel like you're dressed to the nines! there is a young, casual feel with the very hip music in the background, and the food cooked to perfection to make it all worth the money (it's not cheap). i suggest go there before seeing a show, or going to the movies or theatre. it sets the perfect mood. but you might be happier just sitting there all night having wine after wine and dessert after dessert. you'd be hard-pressed to find an unhappy customer i would think.

This is a little gem. Find the lime green door and head up the stairs do this fun filled oasis. The food is good, the small bar is crowded or if you can grab a 'poof' to lounge on. They usually squeeze a little jazz band in to add to the buzz

"An after work meeting place - Amber Room"

written: 09 November 2000
The Amber Room, next to the Royce Hotel, is a great space to meet friends for an after work drink or two. The bar is spacious with plenty of room (if you are there early enough) to grab a seat or couch. Can get noisy as the evening progresses - but then that is a good reason to go next door for dinner and try Dish!!

Pros: Spacious, room to sit.

There are few places to purchase MAC in Australia but fortunately most Myer stores stock a full range. Sales Assistants, I have found, are a lot more helpful than at other make up counters and the products (about middle range in price $29 Lipstick, $35 Bronzer, $27 Eyeshadow) are all superb and tend to outlast a lot of other products I have tried.

Pros: Helpful Staff, great products

"London's calling"

written: 05 November 2000
Dinner at The London is such a treat from start to finish. The service is incredibly attentive, water glasses constantly filled, wine glasses attended to. There is a great range of food all with a little twist of something unique, with mains starting at around $20+, and a fabulous selection of desserts from around $12+. On top of the great wines, service and food there are spectacular views of the bay, and if you happen to be lucky can witness ships docking in the port. An amazing site on the dark horizon. Definitely worth a visit.

Pros: Impeccible service, great bay views

"Turn right from the left lane!"

written: 31 October 2000
For those who are not used to driving in Melbourne's city centre (or the CBD, as it is known), you need to be aware of turning at major intersections. You will notice signs above the intersection which say "Hook Turn" - this means that you turn right from the left hand lane, waiting until the lights have actually gone red, so that you are going with the traffic in the adjacent road. It's a bit confusing, so get someone to explain it to you, or better still, show you, before you attempt it. It's done for the purpose of the trams, so that you don't hold them up.

Pros: don't get trams dinging their bells at you!
Cons: difficult if you're not used to it

For a great atmosphere, good food, and nice clientele, head for O'Connell's in South Melbourne. "Cosy, unique and delicious"

written: 18 October 2000
If you are looking for a new cosy Melbourne restaurant to try then this may be for you. From George Pde, a tiny lane way off Collins Street, you step down into the cosy surrounds full of wooden tables and wicker chairs. There is a choice of bistro (were you can choose from a selection of pastas and risottos) or the restaurant were you can have a juicy steak or delicious salmon steak. Desserts were a treat - especially the lemon tart!! There is a small bar if you just want to sit in the bistro for a drink and some antipasto.

"Turkish indulgence"

written: 16 October 2000
I have never been to Turkey, so I can't really compare the food or the environment of Alasya to the local cuisine and ambience too closely, but I am pretty sure that it would be pretty close (from all accounts of friends that have been). This large restaurants offers an equally large selection of sish-kebabs, dips, and of course, turkish bread. They just keep bringing the bread out, still warm from the oven. Trams are crowded and inconvenient at the best of times but when you actually wear your backpack and attempt to get off a crowded tram you are likely to leave angry, battered commuters in your wake. "Turns that defy logic"

written: 10 October 2000
It's difficult to create a driving environment where cars and trams can co-exist without an accident occurring every 5 minutes. Melbourne manages to deal with this (in the Central Business District) with cars being forced to do a "hook turn". And how does this work? Well, when intending to do a right hand turn (we drive on the left hand side of the road remember), you need to make the turn from the left hand lane. Sound confusing? Well, it is for many visitors, but it really is simple. You pull into the left lane of an intersection, wait until the lights in your direction turn red, check that there are no red light runners, and finish your turn. It clears the intersection for the trams to move freely in the CBD area...a relief for all.

Pros: Allows intersections to remain clear

"Lofty pizza heights"

There's a big gap between good pizza and ordinary oizza. Unfortunately, I have tasted plenty of ordinary pizzas in my time. If you want to do something totally different and have a real treat, then go up in a hot air balloon over the Yarra Valley, 45 minutes from the city centre of Melbourne. The Yarra Valley is where Victoria's famous wineries are located, which means the countryside is just gorgeous and the view from above is exquisite. Go Wild Ballooning is a great company to do this with, b/c you get to go to Yerring Station Winery afterwards for a delicious breakfast of bacon, eggs, cereal, fresh fruits, and of course the obligatory champagne. This winery is divine, and the champagne they produce is delectable ($30 bottles that you can drink as much of as you want over breakfast). "Shopping - chick style"

written: 11 September 2000
The new Alannah Hill store which has just opened in Howie Place (just behind the Sportsgirl Centre)is a must see for all those chicks looking for a that must have little skirt, cardigan, handbag or flower for your hair. This new store, recently opening in Melbourne's CBD, is definitely worth a look. With much more space than any of the other stores, its plush red interior gives the store a warm, mellow feel. Racks are all colour coded, so i n that regard it is easy to find what you are looking for. Nothing is especially cheap but for a special occasion or just 'cause 'you deserve it' it is worth a look.

Pros: Shop is like a groovin' lounge

"Bargain shopping"

written: 07 September 2000
This place is like a big shopping centre made up of factory outlets. They've got some big names there, like Colorado, David Lawrence, Esprit, Table Eight but this place can be pretty 'hit and miss'. Some days you can find heaps of bargains and others you have to wade through heaps of trash to find anything worth buying. It's out in the suburbs, but you can catch a bus from Hampton Station and it's a great place to go on a wet day because everything is indoor.

"The Dandenongs - the old fashioned way"

written: 06 September 2000
If you visit Melbourne and want to take time out from the rat race, there is one Melbourne icon you have to experience. Puffing Billy. Puffing Billy is an old steam train that chugs its meandering way through the Dandenong Ranges. This is a fantastic was to experience the temperate rainforest of the Dandenongs, breath in that fresh country air, relax and unwind. A Melbourne native, Puffing Billy is synonymous with my childhood. Puffing Billy is family friendly and easily accessible by car or public transport (Belgrave train line)from Melbourne. I suggest the return trip to Emerald Lake, especially in Summer. The PB line has been extended to Gembrook, but as yet, there isn't much to do at the end of the line to fill in time for the return trip. Personally the trip to Gembrook is too long, even one-way. Puffing Billy also has a number of other products, including the Dinner Train. You can even hold your wedding reception on him!!!!

Pros: Family Friendly, relaxing, scenic, open everyday
Cons: Can get monotonous, not worth going to Gembrook

"Shopping hours in general"

written: 04 September 2000
Melbourne shopping hours have extended quite a bit over the years, so that you have the convenience of shopping 7 days a week. All the big shopping centres are open on Sundays usually till at least 1 or 5, and some strip shopping (ie. Chapel St) is open all day long too. Late night shopping happens on Friday nights, and some Thursdays too, but Fridays shops are open till 9pm in the main shopping districts. Most supermarkets are open 24hours too nowadays, at least in the inner city suburbs.

"Relax in la la land"

I don't really want to disclose this hidden treasure, but I'll have to! I went to la la land on Friday night and was really impressed with the laid-back, extremely friendly and completely unpretentious staff, the red walls, the blue lamps, the (fake) log fire, and the comfy couches in this little den. At the back of the bar, there is a little room with cushions etc - which is a little different to the atmosphere at the front, and you'd go there for a quiet conversation between a couple of people. This place is a definite find, and I'll be going back for sure.

If you're into the big 'shopping centre' thing, then Southland is a pretty good place to go. It's a bit further out of the city than some other places, but it's had some MAJOR renovations in the past year which have brought in some great new shops. It's made up of two sections (on either side of a highway) with a bridge connecting the two. For THE best green curry around, make the Golden Triangle a stop on your next culinary outing. This is by far the best green chicken curry I've ever tasted, and the servings are more than generous. Don't expect to be able to fit in too many entrees, because the mains are really big, and only around $12 or 13. The chicken is the most tender and the white pieces of fillet are a delight for those who don't like the darker pieces of meat! With an Italian slant to the food (great pastas and desserts), you can't go past La Camera with its colourful decor and paintings on the walls to their friendly service and good all round food. You can relax here without the pretention of the rest of Chapel St's restaurants.

Pros: great food, prices not too bad, service great!

"Silky Apple for great Chinese"

written: 28 July 2000
Always busy, so worth booking a table to make sure you get one, the Silky Apple is a good family restaurant, with great Chinese food. If it's really busy, the service might be a bit slow, but generally, it's pretty good. Make sure you have the peking duck for a main course, and the sesame prawn toasts are the best I've tasted anywhere! But take a jumper because the air-con is always on so it can get a bit cool...

Pros: family atmosphere, tasty food, reasonably priced

"Tickets please"

written: 26 July 2000
Melbourne does not possess a fantastic public transport system, but there is diversity in the modes at your disposal. Trains, trams and buses and they all come under the same ticketing system, which is nice. The city is divided into 3 transport zones, and most visitors should find a zone 1 ticket (all day or 2 hour validity) to be their best option.

Pros: Large transport network

"AFL - last chance"

written: 25 July 2000
A note to all visitors to the sometime sunny shores of Australia. If you want to see Australia's own national sport - the AFL (Australian Football League) do so over the next few weeks. We only have 2 rounds left of the regular season before we move on to the finals. Nothing is more Aussie than the footy, a beer, a meat pie and a distaste for those men in white - the AFL umpires (affectionately called "white maggots"). With the finals, comes a price increase so if you haven't seen a game yet - get in quick!!

"Dragon Fly Chinese Restaurant"

written: 24 July 2000
A Quality Chinese restaurant it ain't! But if you're after something different (And don't mind mediocre food) then this will be right up your alley. I went on Friday 21/07/00 and (drumroll)...sat next to a wrestling ring!! Yep you can eat that mediocre food whilst watching a couple of behemoths duke it out - and these wrestlers fake it better than the food does - so if taste, decor, yummyness etc are not high on your lists - BUT an interesting evening is - go to the Dragon Fly

"The Stokehouse - a must"

written: 24 July 2000
Located right on the beach in St Kilda, the Stokehouse is one of the most popular places to go on a sunny weekend afternoon or evening. With a bistro at ground level, you can choose to sit inside or outside (right next to the rollerbladers who go gliding past), order at the bar (good fish 'n chips, noodles, pastas - usual bistro fare), and sit back and enjoy the prime location and fun atmosphere. If you prefer a more upmarket menu (and prices), book in for a very special table upstairs. The seafood is excellent, and it's known as one of the best swish restaurants in Melbourne.

"Claypots galore!"

written: 19 July 2000
Claypot, in St Kilda (and there's one in the city too), is delicious. Very small (smaller in winter because there's no outdoor seating), no bookings, fantastic food, friendly waiters - this sums up Claypot. It's best to go in a small group because of the seating limitations, and get a bit of everything and share: a large claypot (choose from Asian style or South American style flavours), some seafood entrees, and crack open a bottle of wine that you've brought along yourself (it's BYO!). Be prepared to have a great time and a taste sensation to match!

"Garden escapes"

written: 18 July 2000
Melbourne is a very "green city", with the city's founders having the foresight to dedicate plenty of space in the inner city area for parklands (and developers being kept at bay from these areas - to an extent). The Royal Botanic Gardens are a favourite place of mine to escape and relax. A great place to read the weekend paper, or to stroll in a well lanscaped setting. They also host theatrical performances and a moonlight cinema in the summer months.

"Veggin' out @ the vegiebar"

written: 18 July 2000
When discussing the merits of vegetarian (and vegan) cuisine - go no further than the Vegie Bar. An Institution on Brunswick Street, the Vegie Bar has been dishing out no-nonsense vegetarian fare for many years now & the punters just keep on returning (myself included). The food is wholesome & unfussy, the prices keep that healthy smile on ya dial, and you can leave knowing that the meal you've just enjoyed was prepared without pain. So for those who can't live without their meat, but occasionally feel the tinge of guilt - visit the Vegie Bar - the food couldn't taste better...even if it had meat in it.

With GST just come in, lessen your grocery expense by shopping at the South melbourne market on a Sunday afternoon. Same deal as any market, where they try to get rid of almost everything at the end of the day, so this is the best time to go (closes at 4pm). There are some cute little handicraft stalls, homeware stalls, lolly stalls, plus your usual fruit, vegies, meats, seafood, delis. Not as big as the Queen Vic, but well worth it for the value.

"Four seasons in one day"

written: 12 July 2000
I hate to say it (as a passionate local constantly defending the city's weather to the sceptical), but Melbourne's weather is certainly unpredictable at the best of times. It is often said that if you don't like the weather in Melbounre, wait a minute. Anyway, my advice to visitors - come prepared. Carry extra clothing with you when you head out for the day (and an umbrella or rain jacket is not a bad option as well). It might same a hinderance at the time, but it will often come in handy later on.

Pros: Unpredictability is character building
Cons: Spread of negativity

"the prince - an melbourne icon"

written: 12 July 2000
just about everyone knows about the prince (or the prince of wales, as it was formerly known). it is a large pub/hotel/nightclub located on busy fitzroy st in st kilda, and is the home of live bands on fridays, and disco nights on saturdays. it's been around for years, and will continue to be around for a long time to come. with melbourne's best dj's playing there on saturday's, it's a really fun place to go for a boogie! can be difficult to get in at times (but usually just a wait, rather than a knock back), a cover charge is imposed (around $10) but the music is great and the layout is cool. there is a huge balcony upstairs where you can go for a breather, but the main room is where all the action takes place. wear your best clubbing gear, and rock to the beats till the wee hours of the morning. it starts kicking off around midnight.

"Go rollerblading along the foreshore!"

written: 12 July 2000
The St Kilda/Port melbourne foreshore is the most popular place to go rollerblading in Melbourne. Pull your blades on at either end, and take off! If you stop at the St Kilda end, treat yourself to a milkshake or a coffee at one of the many cafes that make up the precinct, and if you stop at the Port Melbourne end, tuck into a hearty fish 'n chips at Delish Fish and sit along the newly designed boardwalk. It's busy but not too overcrowded on the weekends, and evenings are a great time to go too! There are virtually no hills and it's a really nice ride to take. From reds, whites and sparkling wines - there is a huge variety to sample. Many of the wineries have restaurants or cafes and all do tastings. Must sees are Chandon, De Bortoli and Yering Station (to name only a few). Great for a day trip.

Pros: A range of vineyards to suit all paletes
Cons: Really need a car to fully explore the area

"Spy bar"

written: 19 June 2000
Melbourne is pretty posh and in some hip venues they dig the guest lists. However, if you have a couple of local friends -female if possible- it will make your life easier. The coolest place I've seen is the Spy in South Melbourne. Nice music, nice croud without too much attitude. <br> It's a fun city and there are plenty of nice bars and restaurants.

Pros: low prices, friendly people
Cons: guest lists

"melbourne zoo"

written: 19 June 2000
If you go to Melbourne you must go to the zoo to see the kangaroos, the koalas BUT also the wombats and the platypus. I have to say the wombats are the best... even though you will definitely feel like taking a koala home with you :)

Pros: unique animals, beautiful area
Cons: the birds, you can avoid

"Couches and lounges at Revolver"

written: 19 June 2000
If you always miss out on the couple of couches in bars, then Revolver is the place for you! Filled with couches of all shapes and colours, this club/lounge/restaurant is great for a cheap Thai feed, for some live music on a Friday night, or just a chilled out atmospheric chat. Don't wear anything too dressy - this place is where you can be yourself and get comfortable.

Pros: tasty food, great atmosphere
Cons: music can sometimes be not so chilled

"Melbourne Festival rocks!"

written: 19 June 2000
If you are plannign a trip to Melbourne around November, be sure to attend a few performances at the Melbourne Festival. Many of them are free, many are international acts, and the location of these performances are usually on the Yarra around Southbank - perfect on a warm, almost-summer's night!

Pros: great atmosphere - brings the city alive!
Cons: some performances can be expensive
Rating: 3/4

"A very liveable city!"

written: 19 June 2000
Melbourne is known to its locals as being a very 'liveable' city. With a great arts scene, more sport than you can poke a stick at, and the best coffee in Oz, not to mention its beautiful gardens and not too bad inner city beaches, it's got the best of all worlds rolled into one. During winter, the mountains are just under 3 hours drive away, and although they're no Alps, they do for a bit of fun.

Pros: cheaper than Sydney, very cosmopolitan
Cons: getting more expensive to live there
Rating: 4/4

"Great neighbourhoods for young people!"

written: 19 June 2000
If you're looking for an area to live as a young working person, here are some fo the best and most convenient suburbs: Fitzroy, St Kilda, Elsternwick, Elwood, Carlton. Personally I live in Elsternwick and I love it for the proximity to St Kilda's nightlife, the beach, and the ethnicity of the area. Plus it's nowhere near being pretentious, which is even better! Gotta love the bakeries in Glenhuntly Rd too!

Pros: location of all these neighbourhoods is the best.
Cons: must search around for good value housing

"City CircleTram"

written: 15 June 2000
You can't get very much for free these days, but you can catch the city circle tram around the perimeter of the central business district of Melbourne - good way of getting initial city bearings, and to rest weary legs for locals and tourists alike.

Pros: Free is always good :)
Cons: Limited areas covered
Rating: 3/4

"Airport transport"

written: 13 June 2000
Melbourne does not have much in the way of public transport access to/from the airport (25km from the city centre). There is, however, an Airport Bus service that operates at regular intervals to/from the airport to/from several inner city locations (Spencer St station is probably the easiest to access). The price for a one way trip is AUD$10, and it is a much cheaper to getting a taxi.

Pros: Cheap alternative to taxi
Cons: few drop off points in city
Rating: just a tip

"The Esplanade Hotel"

written: 13 June 2000
Better known to locals as The Espy, it is a bit of a live music institution. Always a lively atmosphere with a diverse range of sounds. Sunday afternoon's comedy in the Gershwin Room is definitely worth a look.

Pros: cheap (or no) cover $, good food available too
Cons: a little rough around the edges
Rating: 3/4

For those craving soem good quality, and reasonably priced, vegetarian food, then head down to Fitzroy Street (in St Kilda) for a great selection of Asian orientated meals. The "lassi's" are worth the effort alone.

Pros: plnety of variety to keep you going back, fresh
Cons: not licenced or BYO alcohol :(

"Chinta Blue"

written: 13 June 2000
Chnita Blue is probably one of the best (quality and prcie) Malaysian Hawker bars in Melbourne (located in Acland Street St Kilda). The curry laksa is definitely worth a try!

Pros: Located in the heart of ST Kilda (close to trams)
Cons: Busy, cannot make advance booking
