Haus der Musik: "If you like music..."
written:
12 January 2002

This is a not very famous museum, but it's great! Many of its sections are interactive and you'll be able to work with sounds, know about Austrian music and even conduct a virtual orchestra!
Pros: Not many people, well organised
Cons: A bit expensive
Rating: 4/4
Details: Near Karlsplatz

Nice to do a small trip: "Baden"

Baden is a small town near Vienna, but it has beautiful sights. To go there and spend a good afternoon you can catch the Baden train, which departs from the Opera station.
Pros: The town is a quiet beautiful place
Cons: The train is a bit slow
Rating: 3/4

"Rathausplatz"
written:

The Rathausplatz (Town Hall Square) is the space in front of Vienna's town hall. From mid-November to Dec. 24, there is the "Christkindlmarkt" (Xmas market), with a huge Xmas tree, and dozens of booths selling the cheesiest stuff imaginable, as well as various kinds of food and Glühwein and Punsch (two different kinds of alcoholic hot drinks). In February, an ice skating rink is mounted right next to the town hall, and again there's food and drink. All thru July and August finally, there is food and drink again (this time int'l), in addition to performances (classical music; each night audio only in the interlude, then a projection on a huge screen, mostly either an opera or a concert).
Pros: Unique events, each in its own way
Cons: Crowded, expensive; in winter: freeze-UR-toes-off
Rating: 4/4

Spanische Reitschule Wien (Spanish Riding School);: "Spanish Riding School"

Very traditional, very Viennese, a little kitsch, yes, that too. Every Japanese tourist has been here, while most Viennese have not. Anyway. Regular tickets are rather expensive (ATS 250 to 900.--), while tickets for the two-hour-"Morgenarbeit" (training sessions on weekdays Tue-Fri) are not (ATS 100.--). Information at http://www.spanische-reitschule.com/english/welcomee.html.
Pros: Very Viennese
Cons: A little kitsch maybe
Rating: just a tip

"see an opera for a couple of dollars!"
written:

The Opera House in Vienna is world famous, but you don't have to be famous to actually go there! Tickets in the standing room are available for most operas at around $2-$5 each! Although you have to stand up the whole time, and your view is not perfect, it's a chance to see an opera while on a budget - something you wouldn't ordinarily be able to afford. Last minute standing room tickets are not hard to come by either - I got mine on the same day as the opera.
Pros: cultural fix, cheap, beautiful performances
Cons: view is not great, legs get tired!
Rating: 4/4
