Try a guided boat trip to see around the city and get a good feel for the medieval section. Much of the city centres round the rivers and canals so it is the perfect way to see things, and decide where you want to go back to later. We used the company just across the river from the old meat market and th guide ws fluent in pretty much any language with a constant store of information and anecdotes for the whole 40 min trip. At only 5E a person it was good value too!
