If beer is your thing, there are two really great pubs were they serve their own brew. One is called Le Cheval Blanc, and has got a very alternative atmosphere. Beers include wheat beers, fruit beers, as well as traditional ale or lagers. This particular pub probably caters more to the Université de Montréal crowd, (i.e.: French) as it is more or less in the East part of town.
The other pub is Brutopia, and is in the middle of the Concordia University area. So, more of an English crowd. Beers are more traditional English, such as Ales and Stouts. Not as alternative of a bar, it nevertheless has a great atmosphere.
Pros: Cheval Blanc beer is sold in stores, great beer
Cons: Brutopia is very very crowded
Details: Le Cheval Blanc: 809 Ontario Est; Brutopia: 1215 Crescent
