Santuario de Las Lajas: "Ipiales: The Most Visited Religious Site in the Americas?" by jwc_naga

This is a very famous Gothic style church that has been built in a spectacular gorge. Some say it is the most visited religious site in the Americas. During religious festivals and weekends this place is packed with pilgrims. It's situated 7kms from Ipiales the Colombian boarder town and is less than 20km from Tulcan the Ecuadorian boarder town. A day trip from Ecuador is very easy as visas are a mere formality. I have crossed the boarder there in less than 20 minutes. There are lots of places to stay and the place is deserted during the week. I stayed in the Convent there......It's very quiet..(I was there during the week)...and Cheap, around 7000pesos (US$3.50). There used to be buses direct to the church but it seems that the taxi drivers have put a stop to that. You can take a bus most of the way from the center of Ipiales and then walk about 4-5kms to the church. It's a beautiful walk. Alternatively you can take a taxi for 5000-6000 pesos.
