Nice's Farmer's Market: "Le Marche Aux Fleurs"

written: 16 April 2001
They are all best purchased at the largest street market in Nice, Le Marche aux fleurs, which means Flower market. While the array of floral offerings is quite something, the flower merchants are only set up two days a week. Three of the other days the vendors are local farmers who come in between 9am and 1pm (which is 13 O'clock here, as most of Europe reads in Military time). These days you can walk the stretches of the six block, two laned market between stands loaded with vine-ripe tomatoes, walnuts, cheeses and bread, varieties of olives, spices, homemades jams and pastries, among countless other items. Including tripe. While even 13 O'clock (treize heures) has been a little too early on many mornings, we went yesterday at about a quarter till, to find merchants ready to pack up, and thus liquidating their daily produce. We scored 5 kilos of fresh tomatoes, which is twelve pounds, or two very full bags for the equivalent of about a dollar-fifty. About thirty oranges put us back two dollars, etc. For less than twenty bucks, we got what I figure would have been a sixty dollar grocery affair in the states.

and some are inexpensive too: "So much to choose from"

written: 06 March 2001
The "Centre Ville" of Nice is the best place to go for an incredible variety of restaurants. You can choose between a romantic dinner at one of the restaurants on the Promenade des Anglais on the beach(a little more $$$) or squeeze between lots of other good looking French, Spanish, German, or Italian tourists at one of the thousand pizzerias. This area is lots of fun!!

Pros: great variety in cuisine
Cons: not very good service
