If you are in Pisa, Genova, or anywhere in Italy, you should check out the Cinque Terre - five teeny towns perched on cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. From Pisa, you can start in Riomaggiore and hike on to Manarola, Corneglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso. Some of the hikes are short, some longer, but all are beautiful, on the edges of cliffs, through olive groves, vineyards. Each town has its own charm, but all are amazingly colorful. There are no cars and streets are perfect for exploring. This region is the birthplace of pesto and foccacia - which are amazing!
Pros: beautiful views, lots to explore, great hikes
Cons: getting touristy
Details: trains connect the Cinque Terre to Pisa and Genova http://home.sunrise.ch/avong/cinque_terre/index.htm
