Il Palio: "Il Palio"

This is a horse race which takes place twice a year, the first palio being in june or july, and the next one being around the middle of august. it's a battle between the 17 contradas (regions) surrounding the city of Sienna, and people
come from all over to support their favourite or home contrada. it's always controversial and such a spectacle with a big parade in the morning while the race itself takes place around 7pm. the colours are awesome and the atmosphere is electric with the festivities beginning the night before. sienna doesn't sleep much the night before. if you go there, it's a real experience to join the die-hard fans in the square the night prior, to save a spot at the fence for the next day.
Pros: atmosphere, cultural, a real spectacle
Cons: packed and hard to see much of the race.
