"Traditional Islands" by erion

Hakata Pier offers ferries to the Marine World off the coast but also a midnight ferry does a run to the traditional Gotto Retto Islands off Nagasaki. Departing from Hakata could be a much more convenient method than train or bus travel to Sasebo or Nagasaki city for the connecting ferries. Ferry travel in this part of Japan is very expensive but also very necessary to get to these rarely visited islands which are really worth a look. The sushi bars packed with seventh or eighth generation fisherman or worth the trip alone. Best to have some Japanese to do this, but a decent sense of adventure (as well as plenty of Yen) would be a fair substitute.
Pros: Plenty of friendly locals to talk to.
Cons: At certain times of year the sea is very rough
