Kakuouzan, Oosu, etc.: "Nagoya street life?"

Nagoya suffers from being third in Japan (behind Tokyo and Osaka). People pass through it. Even locals deride it. But you do find some interesting places if you hang around long enough.
Kakuouzan (Remember-King-Mountain) is a good antidote for those who are sick of the sameness of Japanese cities. It's undeveloped - centred on a row of traditional shopfronts leading away from the subway station to the temple. You can buy almost anything there (except maybe cell phones) - tatami, spices and teas direct from south Asia, fabrics, incense, pottery - and you can eat and drink fairly widely too - kushimono, Turkish kebabs, Malaysian curries, Guinness. The look is somehat ramshackle but not run down; reminds me of Kensington Market in my hometown (Toronto).
There's also a flee-market/festival 4 times a year, with some great music finds (both live and recorded).
Oosu is another somewhat chaotic neighbourhood (my preference, obviously), seedier, with a a temple full of pigeons, and that odd mix of used clothes, home-cooked food and cutting edge computer goods (new and used).

Cons:
Details: check the subway map
