Koyasan- Buddhist Community: "Lotus Meditation Temple"

100km south of Osaka, 3000 ft up in the mountains is a community known as Mt. Koya, or Koyasan hereafter. You can travel by train and cable car to get up to the town. Here you will find the largest concentration of buddhists, that follow Shoga (or esoteric) Buddhism. I highly recommend you stay in one of the Buddhist Temples which are also run like inns. You sleep in a tatami matted room, with hand painted screens or shoji and lie on futons. The give you wonderfully comfortable robes and you bathe in public bathrooms with showers and a hot tub. They serve you a vegetarian dinner and breakfast and the mother of the head monk, will visit and recant the history for Koyasan in English. In the morning you awake to a gong to participate in the 6am buddhist service. For 45 minutes you sit on a heated mat in front of buddhist monks chanting and praying to Buddha. During the day you can tour one of the largest cemetaries in the world as well as many other temples. If you feel a chill in the air, stop by the one-stop sake vending machine to keep you warm and happy.
