Dance clubs in Nairobi: "The Florida dance clubs"
by tintin92
written: 19 May 2001 last time there: November 1999
Despite what my esteem fellow iAgoran may say about the dance clubs Florida 2000 and the New Florida, these are great places to go if you don't want a pretentious, snooty atmosphere that you'll find in the some of the trendy clubs in Nairobi (or elsewhere in the world).
The Floridas are not seedy places with shady characters scoping out the crowd. If prostitutes hang out here, it's because so many slimy expats go there looking for them. You can have an excellent time there and never once be bothered by that scene. I talked to some of these ladies and they're funny and more charming than some of the people I met at e.g. Carnivore.
Each Florida has a club-scene decor, not spectacular but not tasteless either. They have a wide mix of people in terms of age, race, econo-background -- this is not true in many clubs in Nairobi. The music is very good, modern, perfect for dancing, mixed between dance/pop/hip-hop/R&B in international flavors of American, African, Caribbean and Asian. The dance floor is small but always packed. And at some point in the night, at least on the weekends, professional dancers come out and do a 15-20-minute cabaret performance! Like most clubs in the world except the USA, the clubs don't close until morning, about 6-7am.
Anytime I go to Nairobi I visit any new club that's available but I always pay a visit to the Floridas.
Word of caution for any time you go out anywhere in the developing world: you are a tourist or expat no matter how world-travel suave you are; you are a bigger target than the residents. Be smart, be safe. Have fun!
Pros: one of the landmark dance-clubs in Nairobi
Cons: sometimes can be too crowded
Details: Moi avenue next to Kenya cinema plaza
