Mérida is a pretty good place to locate yourself if you want to be close to the main Mayan ruins in the area. The ruins at Chichen Itza and Uxmal can all be reached fairly conveniently from here. Besides these there seem to be various other lesser known sites and monuments in the region - no one knows how many might lie deep in the jungle!
