Seoul Restaurant Coreà: "Korean food"

written: 08 March 2001
Korean food is not as well-known as other kinds of Asian food, and Barcelona is not a great place for Asian food, with hardly any choices outside of the big 3 (Chinese, Indian and Japanese). So it comes as a nice surprise to find a great Korean restaurant in Barcelona, owned by actual (and very nice) Koreans. The food is tasty; more 'clear' than chinese, but not quite as minimalistic as japanese. Try the Korean tapas, and the bowl of rice with chunks of raw fish, if you're into that. At midday they have a cheaper lunch menu; in the evening it is a bit more expensive.

Pros: good food, not too expensive, nice owners
Cons: so-so decoration
Rating: 3/4

Govinda: "Indian restaurant"

written: 08 March 2001
Govinda is known as a good place to get Indian food in Barcelona. It is located in Plaça de Madrid, just below plaça Catalunya. The decoration and athmosphere is quite "authentic": Hindu paintings on the walls, raga (classical indian music) playing as the background (not live though :(). The food is good, in the typical Indian style: nice, creamy and (somewhat) spicy. Btw, since locals are not very used to spicy food, the waiter asks how spicy you want it. If you say 'medium' it's actually quite mild. The 'thalis' (combinations of lots of dishes) are very nice. Prices are a bit on the expensive side; count on spending 2500 or 3000 ptas.

Pros: good food, good athmosphere
Cons: a bit expensive
Rating: 3/4

La Llar de Foc: "Catalan cuisine in cosy atmosphere"

written: 01 March 2001
For the local specialty "calçots", and other yummy delights, such as the quatro quesos and the canneloni de espinacas - try this little cosy restaurant. Decorated with checkered tablecloths and old utensils hanging from the walls, you'll be happy with the service, the food and the general ambience. Worth a try for sure - they recommend booking for larger groups because the place itself it quite small.

Pros: tasty food, really nice service
Cons: they had the radio on in the background!

Harmony: "You can find good sushi in Barcelona!"

written: 27 February 2001
If you're amongst a group who all feel like different cuisines and you can't decide where to go, try out this restaurant. You can choose from Spanish, French, Italian, Mexican or Japanese on the menu, and a word of advice: the sushi is really good!!! Try the california rolls - fresh and delicious! Stear clear of the tacos though, small serving and not inspiring in taste or texture. You'll love the fake starlit sky on one wall - gives it that kitschy feeling.

Pros: good service, great Japanese food
Cons: bright lights!

L'Eremo di Hortensia: "Medieval and Reinassance restaurant"

written: 15 February 2001
There's a legend about Hortensia that says that she traveled all around the world looking for her love, a knight. It's even told that she might still be alive since she knew about alquimist secrets... L'Eremo was a restaurant that Hortensia built hoping to hear news from her beloved one. The food was so good there that it became famous. Well, back to the present, this is a restaurant based on a legend, with really good food, probably very different from what you're used to. At 11.30pm a comedy show starts with a "vedette" that's waiting for Almodovar and at midnight there's a guy that does tarot. Quite an experience the overall thing...

Pros: Nice decoration, good food, funny
Cons: Not cheap, migth be a bit cheesy

Le Tre Venezie: "Good set menu for lunch"

written: 14 February 2001
This is not my favourite restaurant, specially to have dinner. But, I've re-discovered it as a lunch restaurant with a very good priced set menu. So, if you're downtown, close to Colón and don't know where to have lunch, I would go there. It's really worth it. And the decoration is somehow interesting... it's a cosy place.

Pros: Great set menu for lunch
Cons: Not worth it to order from the menu

Semproniana: "Kitch and trendy"

written: 27 December 2000
The cuisine at this restaurant is amazing, really good. But besides this, the decoration is tons of fun: every wall is painted in a color, the menus change periodically, every dish has a different color, the table cloths are hand painted... really cool. It might remind of Almodovar a bit, but it has it's own stile. So, besides excellent food you might find a trendy place here... It's about 5.000 Ptas per person if you order two dishes, drink wine and have dessert. You can cut it down if you only have one dish. It's a place worth going.

Pros: Excellent food, trendy, good service
Cons: A bit expensive
Rating: 4/4

La Tinaja: "Bodega - typical Spanish"

written: 24 November 2000
When feeling like drinking good wine and having a taste of good "ibéricos", this is a great place to go to. The quality of the food they serve is pretty good. You can get tapas and "tablas" of different kinds of meats: ibéricos, paté and cheeses. The atmosphere is just the best: flamenco music on the background, a guitar on a chair, every table and chair are different, etc... even though, you can tell this is not an old place.

Pros: fun place
Cons: not the cheapest
Rating: 3/4

El rincón maya: "Auténtica comida Mexicana y coctelería"

written: 24 November 2000
One of those pearls you can sometimes find... It's a tiny restaurant in l'Eixample. It's decoration could be considered "folkloric": shiny mexican hats hanging on the walls, a bright coronitas ad... but if you don't like bright colors, you just have to center on the food, that's delicious. If you like cheese try their quesadillas - excellent! and don't forget to have the tamales, but take the ones with the brown sauce, not the green one. They're something different... For those very much into icities, I would say this is the mexican equivalent of 'Pei Mong', the peruvian restaurant where all iAgorans in Barcelona have had dinner at least once...

Pros: cheap, good food
Cons: small
Rating: 3/4

Dionisos: "Greek restaurant - bar"

written: 03 November 2000
Delicious greek restaurant. If you're in the mood for greek go to this one, no need to look for more. The food is great and something really cool to taste is the wine... it tastes like pine trees. :)

Pros: Excellent food, open people
Cons: not the cheapest
Rating: 4/4
