Pino on Las Ramblas: "Pino Gelato Italiano (hey, that rhymes)"

written: 30 October 2000
There are several Pino locations in Barcelona, but the most convienent is on Las Ramblas near the Plaça Reial. Three large scoops of Italian gelato are only 475 pesetas and it´s worth the money. I recommend the dulce de leche, cookies and creme, banana, and also peanut butter. I don´t know the Spanish word for peanut butter, but ask the woman behind the counter for "spinach." She tries to scare foreigners from trying it, but trust me it´s actually peanut butter--I don´t care what she says. Warning: gelato is addictive and can clog arteries. But, hey, it´s worth it.

Pros: scrumdidilyumptious gelato (that´s a good thing)
Cons: clogged arteries
Rating: 4/4
Details: on Las Ramblas near Plaça Reial

Tapa Tapa on Passeig de Gracia: "Como se dice "Tapas from Hell?""

written: 23 October 2000
I´m not sure that I should place this under the banner of Food of Barcelona. In the family of fine Spanish cuisine, this restaurant can only be considered the evil demon-possessed step child. Am I exaggerating? A little. Was the food there terrible? Yes. Would I like to see my worst enemy eat there?... maybe.

Pros: Amazing location
Cons: Everything else

Tempura-Ya: "Sushi time!"

written: 23 October 2000
Tempura-Ya is my favourite japanese restaurant. The place looks japanese, the chefs are japanese, some of the waiters are, also... and the food is sooooo good! It's very well located and the prices are really good, considering that japanese food is always expensive. If you like sushi, don't miss it. And if you go to have dinner, I would call to make a reservation first.

Pros: It's a great place.
Cons: Make a reservation first.

Café Salambó: "Nice restaurant in Gracia"

written: 23 October 2000
This is a very nice place to eat or have a coffee in Gracia. The food is excellent and the prices are great. The decoration is cozy. I just love this place. After serving dinner, it stays open for a while, 'till 3am, and then you can go there and have a drink. There's a pool table upstairs. So, you can either go there as a restaurant, as a café, or as a bar. You choose!

Pros: Good prices, great atmosphere, good food.
Cons: Might be a bit noisy, slow waiters sometimes.

Can Majó: "Paella, mussels and the sea"

written: 23 October 2000
This restaurant is a fine one in la Barceloneta. If you want to eat a good paella or black rice, go there. And absolutely important: Try their mussels a la marinera. These are just amazingly good. The quality of the food is excellent, they get fresh stuff every day. In summer, you can also sit outside, facing the sea.

Pros: Great food, nice place.
Cons: Might get a bit expensive.

Euskal Etxea: "More Montaditos!"

written: 20 October 2000
This is the "basque house" in Barcelona. Besides being an association for basque people in Catalonia, a place to get information about the basque country and an art galery sometimes, it's also a restaurant. You can sit down and eat tipical basque food, or you can have some montaditos standing around the bar. What they actually do in the basque country is going for a couple montaditos before lunch or dinner, as a snack. I always get too full and I'm never able to eat anything else.

Pros: Very very good montaditos.
Cons: Crowded
Rating: 4/4
Details: C/ Montcada super close to Santa Maria del Mar.

Sagardi: "Montaditos: basque tapas"

written: 20 October 2000
Couldn't believe nobody had reviewed this one yet, 'cos it's lots of fun and pretty good. This is a restaurant where you can either eat by menu or eat montaditos while you stand around the bar. If you go inside to the restaurant you can get great meat and basque cuisine. If you stand around the bar, just try one montadito of each kind and don't forget to order a bottle of Txacolí! (Txacoli is a tipical wine from the basque country).

Pros: Good food, tons of fun.
Cons: Crowded, expensive if you're super hungry.

La Carassa: "The yummiest fondue in BCN"

written: 20 October 2000
A tiny restaurant that you wouldn't be able to find unless you're local... it's on a small passage close to Santa Maria del Mar (a church that BTW, you shouldn't miss). I've had the best meat fondue there, and don't miss the whisky sauce. It's one of the most delicious things I've ever had! The owner is a really funny man. Good luck with his catalan sense of humor!

Pros: Really good food, unique atmosphere.
Cons: Tons of stuff on the walls, might find that weird.
Rating: 4/4

Restaurant Equinox *Verdi: "Libaneese food"

written: 19 October 2000
One of my favorite things to do when I go to see a movie at the verdi theatres is to eat a falafel and drink a mint tea at Equinox. They actually have 3 restaurants around Gracia, but I always go to the one in Carrer Verdi. Their pastries are also delicious, if you like sweet things ;) All the dishes are really good.

Pros: Delicious food. Very cheap.
Cons: It's a noisy place, it is usually packed.

Restaurant Mex & Cal: "Mex & Cal"

written: 19 October 2000
If you miss the Tex-Mex kind of food, you'll be able to find it here. This is a very nice restaurant, pretty big and with good food. At least I enjoyed it a lot. I didn't try the margaritas, but I've heard these ones are among the best in town.

Pros: Nice big place, good background music, nice waiter
Cons: It might end up being a bit expensive.
