"Summer trip to Barcelona"

written: 20 July 2009
I recently got back from a 2 month trip to Barcelona. I was previously warned that the food was rather disappointing, so I can with pretty low expectations. Arriving I was pleasantly surprised with what I found! I had ordered a Connect Club card offline before my travels and glanced at some of the restaurants that were offered with thier discount card. Some of my favorites were Ikibana, located off the Barceloneta metro stop. If you like sushi I would highly recommend this place, the sushi was extremely fresh and melted in my mouth. Another one of my favorite stops for lunch was the Bagel Shop. (c/ Canuda 25 08002 - Barcelona). I never thought I would be able to find bagels as good as this shop offers in Barcelona! I ordered the Classic which is a bagel of your choice, a hefty portion and cream cheese, and fresh smoked salmon. It was delicious! They have numerous sandwhices choices to choose from, or you can create your own. The bagels are made fresh daily and are definitely a great way to start off the day. And best of all, I enjoyed 10% off with my Connect Club card! You can check out thier website at www.connectclub.com for a full list of discounts.

"Couldn't have been worse!"

written: 16 June 2003
Don't know where to start! Service was incredibly bad, unattentive, bread taken from another table and was soggy on arrival...but the worst part was that the waiter forgot to communicate our main course orders to the kitchen! They gave us free desserts to make up for it but I had to go and find another place for my friend to get soemthing substantial to eat after only her salad starter! I will not be returning!

"Les Quinze Nits"

written: 13 April 2003
PLEASE, save your euros. This place is so not worth it. I went there with a friend in Feb/2003 and the food and service was disappointing. Even if you're a student, this place is too expensive. Bland, BORING food. I've had better at a 7-11. Seriously folks, don't waste your time and money on this tourist trap. There are better places to be had in Barcelona. Is it worth it? only if you want to say you were one of the suckers who fell for an overpriced and overrated joint.

Pros: get amused by street entertainers while queuing
Cons: bland and boring food, bad service

"fun foody way to spend the morning"

written: 25 November 2002
A couple of local foodies have started doing tours of specially selected food shops and bars. Tastings are included - you can taste spanish cheese, hams, some weirdly wonderful chocolate, and end up getting a bit sloshed sampling some really interesting and lovely wines from all around Spain - the owner of the bar who introduces the wines is seriously tasty in his own right! well worth it, but they'll also do cut-down tours if you're short on time or dosh. They're starting other tours soon, such as shopping and Cava. They're really nice people fun to be with. Check out the website www.saboroso.com

"Chintzy Sushi"

written: 13 October 2002
Hello Sushi in el Reval may have an enticing interior, but the food is well below average. We ordered a combo plate of fifteen pieces of fish sushi (15 euros) and both gawked at the razor thin slices of fish that laid atop small balls of rice. Miso soup was of similar stature. The service wasn´t bad.

Pros: Fun to sit on the floor

"Unbelievably nice people!"

written: 29 June 2001
This small place right off the Ramblas has a very good selection of quality Spanish hams, cheeses, sausages, and wines for quite moderate prices. But what's most exceptional about this place are the people who run it: I have never in my life been into a place where every service provider is so incredibly and genuinely nice. Seriously, if you're having a bad day, just go in there and order something. They should charge just for their niceness!

Pros: Tasty, cheap, and incredibly nice people!

written: 12 June 2001
This restaurant, located at the beach site of Barceloneta offers a fantastic atmosphere and a great selection of exquisit seafoods. The personnel, in our case Antonio, treats you very special. No wonder all BCN soccer players frequently visit this place for a luxurous evening. Go inside and find a table upstairs, you can see pictures of the patron with Hermanos De Boer, Cuman, Cocu, Ronaldo and many more

"conFUSEd about where to find variety?"

written: 04 May 2001
If you are struggling to find a decent variety in the cuisine offerings of Barcelona, then Fuse is sure to please you no end. From the outside it looks like any other bar with some funky decor, but out the back is aan ambient and spacious environment that acts as a restaurant earlier in the night, before meteamorphising into a club in the wee hours. You might have a tought time deciding what to eat from the menu, with the mouth watering combos on offer (the salmon and pasta starter is a sure thing). But remember, leave plenty of room for dessert. They are all so good, you will want more than one - the Variantes de chocolate impressed this chocoholic!).

"Korean food"

written: 08 March 2001
Korean food is not as well-known as other kinds of Asian food, and Barcelona is not a great place for Asian food, with hardly any choices outside of the big 3 (Chinese, Indian and Japanese). So it comes as a nice surprise to find a great Korean restaurant in Barcelona, owned by actual (and very nice) Koreans. The food is tasty; more 'clear' than chinese, but not quite as minimalistic as japanese. Try the Korean tapas, and the bowl of rice with chunks of raw fish, if you're into that. At midday they have a cheaper lunch menu; in the evening it is a bit more expensive.

Pros: good food, not too expensive, nice owners
Cons: so-so decoration

"Indian restaurant"

written: 08 March 2001
Govinda is known as a good place to get Indian food in Barcelona. It is located in Plaça de Madrid, just below plaça Catalunya. The decoration and athmosphere is quite "authentic": Hindu paintings on the walls, raga (classical indian music) playing as the background (not live though :(). The food is good, in the typical Indian style: nice, creamy and (somewhat) spicy. Btw, since locals are not very used to spicy food, the waiter asks how spicy you want it. If you say 'medium' it's actually quite mild. The 'thalis' (combinations of lots of dishes) are very nice. Prices are a bit on the expensive side; count on spending 2500 or 3000 ptas.

Pros: good food, good athmosphere

For the local specialty "calçots", and other yummy delights, such as the quatro quesos and the canneloni de espinacas - try this little cosy restaurant. Decorated with checkered tablecloths and old utensils hanging from the walls, you'll be happy with the service, the food and the general ambience. Worth a try for sure - they recommend booking for larger groups because the place itself it quite small.

"You can find good sushi in Barcelona!"

written: 27 February 2001
If you're amongst a group who all feel like different cuisines and you can't decide where to go, try out this restaurant. You can choose from Spanish, French, Italian, Mexican or Japanese on the menu, and a word of advice: the sushi is really good!!! Try the california rolls - fresh and delicious! Stear clear of the tacos though, small serving and not inspiring in taste or texture. You'll love the fake starlit sky on one wall - gives it that kitschy feeling.

"Medieval and Reinassance restaurant"

written: 15 February 2001
There's a legend about Hortensia that says that she traveled all around the world looking for her love, a knight. It's even told that she might still be alive since she knew about alquimist secrets... L'Eremo was a restaurant that Hortensia built hoping to hear news from her beloved one. The food was so good there that it became famous. Well, back to the present, this is a restaurant based on a legend, with really good food, probably very different from what you're used to. At 11.30pm a comedy show starts with a "vedette" that's waiting for Almodovar and at midnight there's a guy that does tarot. Quite an experience the overall thing...

Pros: Nice decoration, good food, funny
Cons: Not cheap, migth be a bit cheesy

So, if you're downtown, close to Colón and don't know where to have lunch, I would go there. It's really worth it. And the decoration is somehow interesting... it's a cosy place.

"Kitch and trendy"

written: 27 December 2000
The cuisine at this restaurant is amazing, really good. But besides this, the decoration is tons of fun: every wall is painted in a color, the menus change periodically, every dish has a different color, the table cloths are hand painted... really cool. It might remind of Almodovar a bit, but it has it's own stile. So, besides excellent food you might find a trendy place here... It's about 5.000 Ptas per person if you order two dishes, drink wine and have dessert. You can cut it down if you only have one dish. It's a place worth going.

Pros: Excellent food, trendy, good service

"Bodega - typical Spanish"

When feeling like drinking good wine and having a taste of good "ibéricos", this is a great place to go to. The quality of the food they serve is pretty good. You can get tapas and "tablas" of different kinds of meats: ibéricos, paté and cheeses. The atmosphere is just the best: flamenco music on the background, a guitar on a chair, every table and chair are different, etc... even though, you can tell this is not an old place.

"Auténtica comida Mexicana y coctelería"

written: 24 November 2000
One of those pearls you can sometimes find... It's a tiny restaurant in l'Eixample. It's decoration could be considered "folkloric": shiny mexican hats hanging on the walls, a bright coronitas ad... but if you don't like bright colors, you just have to center on the food, that's delicious. If you like cheese try their quesadillas - excellent! and don't forget to have the tamales, but take the ones with the brown sauce, not the green one. They're something different... For those very much into icities, I would say this is the mexican equivalent of 'Pei Mong', the peruvian restaurant where all iAgorans in Barcelona have had dinner at least once...

"Pino Gelato Italiano (hey,that rhymes)"

written: 30 October 2000
There are several Pino locations in Barcelona, but the most convienent is on Las Ramblas near the Plaça Reial. Three large scoops of Italian gelato are only 475 pesetas and it´s worth the money. I recommend the dulce de leche, cookies and creme, banana, and also peanut butter. I don´t know the Spanish word for peanut butter, but ask the woman behind the counter for "spinach." She tries to scare foreigners from trying it, but trust me it´s actually peanut butter--I don´t care what she says. Warning: gelato is addictive and can clog arteries. But, hey, it´s worth it.

This is the "basque house" in Barcelona. Besides being an association for basque people in Catalonia, a place to get information about the basque country and an art galery sometimes, it's also a restaurant. You can sit down and eat tipical basque food, or you can have some montaditos standing around the bar. What they actually do in the basque country is going for a couple montaditos before lunch or dinner, as a snack. I always get too full and I'm never able to eat anything else.

A friend told me about this restaurant. It's super famous in Paris, but in Barcelona, still not a lot of people know about it. Lucky one if you're in Barcelona and reading this review... This restaurant only offers one dish. Yes, only one 'cos they cook it soooo well, that don't need to cook anything else. You first get a salad with 5 different types of lettuce and the house's special vinagrette dressing and then you get the big piece of meat with delicious french fries. Yummy! i have no idea what this place is called and only sketchy details as to how to get there but i can tell you that this bar-b-que spot is a particularly fine way to spend an afternoon. In a forest setting, this is basically a bunch of tables haphazardly put together serviced by a bar and the eponymous barbecue. basically, you arrive up, ask for a seat, the fat woman takes your order (this is not one for the vegetarians) and you dig in. the wine comes in a thing called a porron, which is basically a glass bubble with a narrow snout. you have to tilt the glass over your head a let the wine spurt into your mouth. great fun that gets you dog drunk in no time. i´d wear old clothes. finally, after eating and drinking your fill, lay down in the grass for a quick nap before returning dizzily, happily home.

And the music is good in this restaurant, so atmosphere too!

Pros: good
Cons: nothing

"Italian Style Fast Food"

written: 07 July 2000
So it's fast food, ok, but far from burgers and similar stuff... it actually tastes good (we're talking pizza, pasta and ensaladas here), plus it's affordable. Try Pizza Hawaiiana or the Lasagna! One restaurant is in Pl. Urquinaona (check out the wall decoration: yes, it's pasta!!!), but ther're several others in town.

Pros: Affordable, real good food; several restaurants
Cons: It keeps being fast food.

"Lucania o las pequeñas pizzas"

written: 07 July 2000

"Raval-Bar"

written: 28 June 2000
Really cute bar/cafe. It´s very close to the Ramblas, but not touristic at all. So it´s nice to have something very close to the center, but sort of off the beaten path. There are changing photo exhibits I think. On the weekend it gets apparently very crowded, but I went on a tuesday and it really wasn´t so bad at all...

Pros: fairly large, funky music, NICE COUCHES
Cons: none

"Alternative to Les Quinze Nits"

written: 26 June 2000
La Dolça Herminia is a branch of Les Quinze Nits, just as cheap, with food just as fabulous, but much less crowded (no reservations accepted, but I've never seen a queue there anyway). To find this restaurant, walk down Comtal off Portal del Angel, Magdalenas is at the very end on the right). Try Crema Catalana for dessert.

Pros: Excellent food, low prices
Cons: Hard to find(?)

"Restaurant Taxidermista"

written: 26 June 2000
A good restaurant at Plaça Real! It is a bit expensive but the food is delicious! You can choose to seat inside or outside! I ate the pork and it was totally amazing. The meat practically melted in my mouth! A good meal will probably cost between US$10 to 20-a change from bocadillos and McD´s.

Pros: Great Food!
