"Barcelona Apartment rentals vs Hotels"

written: 27 January 2006
If you're considering a city break, renting an apartment is usually an affordable and good-value option. For a mid-range apartment in most cities, you will pay about the same per night as for a standard double room in a three or four star hotel, even though the added benefits of privacy, self-catering facilities and more space. A holiday apartment is a flat in which you tend to your own needs in your own way. It offers you all the modern conveniences of home and kitchen provides you with the leisure to cook or prepare snacks at any time. You can wake up in the morning at your leisure, make your own coffee or tea and lounge around. You are living in a neighborhood in a foreign country as a part of the local life. You are experiencing the life, culture and economy of the country and people. Barcelona Apartment rental vs Barcelona Hotel - You save money renting an apartment. Not many other tourists think of staying in a holiday apartment while the high demand for hotel rooms has pushed up its rates. - It can be easier to find available accommodation in an apartment during the peak holiday seasons when most of the hotel rooms are booked up. - You will also be able to find apartments in Barcelona locations that are difficult or too expensive to find a hotel e.g. the beach area. - When there are more than 2 people in your group you will save even more as the average apartment will cost less than the price of a double room in a hotel. - Staying in an apartment can work particularly well for families. Instead of all being holed up in one bedroom, as is normally the case in a hotel, adults and children can sleep in separate rooms. Having a sitting-room means that the children have somewhere to play during the day if they get tired of sightseeing. It also means that you have somewhere to relax in the evenings after they have gone to bed. - You have a landlord to contact if you need assistance. What's the downside? I guess the downside of staying in an apartment is that you have to be your own concierge, ticket agent and cook. How to find your apartment - The internet is full of agencies with detailed information on reserving properties.Guidebooks contain the names and addresses of agencies booking hliday apartments. The government tourist offices also use to have that information. - Study the area you want to visit and decide where you do not want to stay, e.g. if there is a high-crime area or an expensive area. Check maps to see if the area has ready access to the subway, buses, and train stations. If you plan to rent a car be sure there is parking nearby. - Make a list of what you need to make yourself comfortable: internet, washing machine, diswasher, dryer.. Remember: The more appliances you need, the more you will have to pay for the apartment. - Get information on several apartments before making your final decision If you try it, a stay in a holiday apartment will surely prove to be the best vacation you ever have.

"Great accomodation recomended"

written: 28 December 2005
For anyone traveling to Barcelona, I recommend the apartment we booked last time we visited that great city (all the info, rates, etc at http://barnaflat.8m.net). Its location is superb, in a walking distance to most of the sightseeings. It was very nice and very clean and the owner was a very friendly woman. Another tip: do not use the Touristic Buses, they are very expensive and not worth the money.

Pros: excellent location, cosy and nice apartment
Cons: None!

"fashion and art near las ramblas"

written: 04 April 2005
Anincredible multiconcept store near las Ramblas. An example of the catalan design is the decoration of the shop with an exclusive combination of furniture from the sixties and paintings and sculptures all around. The shop includes a little corner wher you can have a drink while watching the latest trend publications and an inner patio with plants and sculptures They have a lot of clothes and accesories for men and women, the most original pieces you can find in Barcelona Don't miss the courreges mini dresses brought from Japan and the catwalks and special events they organize every month. The prices are medium-high depending on the designer, but very reasonable for the quality they offer

"Need a cheap apartment in Barcelona??"

written: 27 September 2004
I just spend the weekend of the year! I have decided to go on a mini vacation with 4 of my friends. As we all live in different cities, we have met at the Barcelona Airport. To get into the city you should buy a 10 ride Metro Ticket. We all used it and it was just 6€!! We had some problems finding a hotel which is quite cheap and fits all of us...but then we saw that it is really economic to rent an apartment - totally furnished and a kitchen!! That saves you up some money, if you can have your breakfast at home and then you´ll spend more for the shopping tour. Its unbelivable, every third street you´ll see a Mango, Zara, Oysho....its like heaven. As we all love organic food, we had a try at Foodball at C/Elisabets. Its deliciously stuffed riceballs with chicken, veggies etc.and its healthy! So in case you head to Barcelona, enjoy it! Before I forget, we got the apartment through www.oh-barcelona.com

"Festes de Gracia"

written: 17 September 2003
Gracia, the relaxed and bohemian neighbourhood, used to be an independent village that had its own mayor and wasnt a part of the greater city of Barcelona. The small town atmosphere can still be sensed and in summer -second week of august- the Gracia Festes in the streets offer an overwhelming experience. Live music, dancing, theatre and all sorts of processions and games set Gracia on fire for a whole week. Every street chooses a unique decoration for the festival and the most originally decorated street recieves a price. The squares are great all year round but get something truly special during the festival. If youre in Barcelona in the hottest month of the year be sure not to miss out!

Pros: Catalan style partying at its finest
Cons: can be crowded and noisy!

Don't know where to start! Service was incredibly bad, unattentive, bread taken from another table and was soggy on arrival...but the worst part was that the waiter forgot to communicate our main course orders to the kitchen! They gave us free desserts to make up for it but I had to go and find another place for my friend to get soemthing substantial to eat after only her salad starter! I will not be returning!

"crazy walks"

written: 16 April 2003
Barcelona was full of people banging pots and trying to burn down McDonalds so I went on a walk out in the country with a deranged Brit a college friend in London told me about. The standard plan seems to be to take a train out to the middle of nowhere, walk up a tarantula-infested mountain, drink wine and eat cheese and sausages in a very dirty bar behind a barn, walk through a forest on the other side, drink some beer with very old men in a village and then take a train back. He's clearly mad, but he knows his stuff. Site is http://followthebaldie.com. Try to get him to put on the dress when he takes you out " we failed.

PLEASE, save your euros. This place is so not worth it. I went there with a friend in Feb/2003 and the food and service was disappointing. Even if you're a student, this place is too expensive. Bland, BORING food. I've had better at a 7-11. Seriously folks, don't waste your time and money on this tourist trap. There are better places to be had in Barcelona. A couple of local foodies have started doing tours of specially selected food shops and bars. Tastings are included - you can taste spanish cheese, hams, some weirdly wonderful chocolate, and end up getting a bit sloshed sampling some really interesting and lovely wines from all around Spain - the owner of the bar who introduces the wines is seriously tasty in his own right! well worth it, but they'll also do cut-down tours if you're short on time or dosh. They're starting other tours soon, such as shopping and Cava. They're really nice people fun to be with. Check out the website www.saboroso.com

"Barcelona's airport"

written: 13 September 2002
It's not a problem to reach the airport or to go to the city coming from it. There are buses every 15 minutes for 3 euros or less. They'll get u to the plaza Catalunya, plaza de España, etc. where u cat take subway (metro) or taxi. There is a train every 30 minutes (cheaper than bus andmuch cheaper if u buy a ticket for 10 times) that will get u to the Sants Estacio, the biggest railway station. There u can take another train to other city or the subway. Try not have too much luggage bc u'll have some problems carrying in and off the train and moving with them through the millions of stairs in Barcelona's subway.

"Anything to get your paper"

written: 07 November 2001
When in Barcelona here are a few things that nearly had me come unstuck. I felt pretty secure about protecting my wallet, though pickpockets there have taken it to the next level. None of the more obvious bumping into you or here hold my baby, I had a youth with a big smile come up to me, "do you want to play this game" Do you like football? No But by this stage your curiosity has been sparked as to why he is hookinjg his leg around your calf and tapping it, diverting your attention from his amigo ripping your wallet from behind. Another is the old escalator trick, one walks and stands in front of you on an upward escalator unassumingly, then suddenly bows down, from behind you get pushed falling on top of the guy in front, exposing your back pocket nicely for the guy behind. It also pays to beware of the (mostly) nigerian prostitutes, in there attempted advances, hands go wandering, perhaps into the coat pocket, I have found the only way to stop them is to grab both there hands, hold them away from you, then leave with haste.

"An amazing musical experience on the train!"

written: 29 October 2001
One of the nicest means of transport is definitely a train! If you happen to find yourself travelling from Barcelona to Sitges, or way back, you will experience something that really amazed me! Music! And not any music, but some really exquisite Classical masterpieces!! Heh, that is right! The first time I took a train was on my way to Barcelona. The weather was great, I was going to visit my friends, and there I was; enjoying Bach!

Pros: great music, nice view, relaxing!

"TIPS TO FINDING WHAT YOU NEED...."

written: 25 October 2001
When I first arrived in Spain, I quickly discovered that you have to go to different stores to find different things....for example, if you want stamps, you can find them at TABAC shops on the streets. If you need medication, you can find them at Pharmacies that usually have a green flashing cross visible on the streets. They also have special fruit/vegetable stands, stores that sell only meats, and bakeries were you can get fresh bread and pastries. Grocery stores have a number of these items, but some of the food isn't as fresh as in the little shops. Corte Ingles has just about everything, but is really expensive.

"Pickpocketers everywhere!"

written: 25 October 2001
I never thought it would happen to me but I was a victim of pickpocketing twice! I wasn't paying attention and my wallet and backpack were stolen...but I somehow got both of them back. Be especially careful if you go to the internet cafe, Easy Everything. Pickpocketers just roam around looking for their next victim. And of course be especially careful if you are in any type of crowded place. When walking, put your bag in front of you so you can see it at all times!

"A Must See"

written: 25 October 2001
When visiting Barcelona, it is really worth taking a 45 minute-1 hour train ride to Manresa to see Monserrat. It is a monastery that sits on top of a mountain. You have to take a cable car to reach the top, but make sure you buy a ticket that allows you to go to the very top of the mountain. There, you can hike all the way up....and it is an absolutely amazing site. I'm afraid of heights but I made myself do it! It was so beautiful and breathtaking.

"Get help with legal matters"

written: 20 July 2001
Recently I had my bike stolen from my apartment. The landlord was unwilling to re-imburse me at first. For those of you in a similar bind, there is still hope: Contact the Generalitat denuncia judicial. This governs complaints under 150,000ptas ($750-1,000?) There are 3 levels of complaint/action you can take with them. 1) The first is the Generalitat denuncia judicial. There is no compensation. 2) The second is the Beuro-fax, usuallly 95% effective in resolving disputes. Something goes out to the wrongdoer on official letterhead, and it threatens a fine or something, and some sort of subtle blacklisting (something like having complaints lodged against you at better business bureau). 3) Level 3 is judicial-civil, which I understand is some sort of small claims court action. For more details, call the number below and have them explain the options to you.

"Can't miss the game???"

written: 02 July 2001
For all of you sport lovers, whether football (soccer), or baseball, basketball or ragby, there are couple of places that will help you not miss the match! One of them is a bar called Sport Caffé, a really awesome place filled with sport requisites and huge TV screens where you can watch games, and have a drink or a whole meal. Another place is solely focused on football (soccer), and is located just opposite to a Mexican bar Panchito's. You can see Dutch football flags (Orange flag with a lion, for those of you who have no clue) from the outside. Furthermore, in the break-time, you can GetConnected to the internet, and check your mail or the scores! :)

"The best 'würst' (sausages) in Sitges"

written: 02 July 2001
If you are not one of those people that can eat a ful meal for dinner, like most Catalans do, but more a snack, and you want to have a taste of a good German beer, there is a place for you in Sitges. Once you pass the central square (with a city clock and a pharmacy!) and forward towards the pubs and clubs of Sitges, the second bar on your left is THE place. You will see the ads for German beer, and a menu filled with all kinds of german sausages (bratwürst, frankfurt-würst and much more!). If you are lucky, you will be served by a girl that looks like a ful-grown Spanish Heidi! ;) The beer is really good and the whole atmosphere can be quite confusing: you are in Spain after all (ups, Catalunya, I mean!...no offence Catalans!), but you happen to be fully enjoying german cuisine.

Pros: great german beer and sausages

This small place right off the Ramblas has a very good selection of quality Spanish hams, cheeses, sausages, and wines for quite moderate prices. But what's most exceptional about this place are the people who run it: I have never in my life been into a place where every service provider is so incredibly and genuinely nice. Seriously, if you're having a bad day, just go in there and order something. They should charge just for their niceness!

"A trip to Roman times"

written: 14 June 2001
One of the most interesting things you can do in Barcelona, is go to "Plaza del Rey" and visit the "Historia de la Ciudad" (City History) Museum. There, wonderfully preserved, the remains of the Roman City of Barcino (ancient name of Barcelona) can be walked through, streets, houses, everything...2000 year old remains of one of the most important cities of the Mediterranean. "conFUSEd about where to find variety?"

If you are struggling to find a decent variety in the cuisine offerings of Barcelona, then Fuse is sure to please you no end. From the outside it looks like any other bar with some funky decor, but out the back is aan ambient and spacious environment that acts as a restaurant earlier in the night, before meteamorphising into a club in the wee hours. You might have a tought time deciding what to eat from the menu, with the mouth watering combos on offer (the salmon and pasta starter is a sure thing). But remember, leave plenty of room for dessert. They are all so good, you will want more than one - the Variantes de chocolate impressed this chocoholic!).

I lived in Spain for a year, Barcelona is where I spent most of time! This is a magical city and certainly grabs you! I am now back in England and am desperately trying to sort out work and study over there. I feel that Barcelona is the place for me. The city is magic and so alive. I spent most of my time hatting for buskers to get money and spent alot of time in Plaza Real which is just off the Ramblas. Alot of people hang around this place. You'll find bars, clubs and lots of little streets leading off from there to more little shops. You have to watch out for pick pockets, but it is great to just sit on one of the benches and watch the world go by, keep your eyes fixed you'll see so mcuh and you'll be gauranteed to be spoken to and meet some beautiful people.

"To cross the street"

I don't know if it's a Spanish tradition or a Catalan one, but sometimes to cross a street become THE great adventure of your life !!! <BR> For example, it's friday night, you are exhausted after a big and hard day at work, you know you've got plenty of stuff to do like to do some shopping, if you want to eat this week-end, to call your friends to know what they are going to do tonight... You watch the traffic lights and there's a green light for you, but it begins to be intermittent. So, please, if you want to stay alive, DON'T cross the street !!! Because when the drivers see that the green light is intermittent for you, they begin again to move forward, evenif it's still red light for them !!! Ah, the dangerous life in city...
