la gauche divine: "fashion and art near las ramblas"

written: 04 April 2005
Anincredible multiconcept store near las Ramblas. An example of the catalan design is the decoration of the shop with an exclusive combination of furniture from the sixties and paintings and sculptures all around. The shop includes a little corner wher you can have a drink while watching the latest trend publications and an inner patio with plants and sculptures They have a lot of clothes and accesories for men and women, the most original pieces you can find in Barcelona Don't miss the courreges mini dresses brought from Japan and the catwalks and special events they organize every month. The prices are medium-high depending on the designer, but very reasonable for the quality they offer

Where to get what....: "TIPS TO FINDING WHAT YOU NEED...."

written: 25 October 2001
When I first arrived in Spain, I quickly discovered that you have to go to different stores to find different things....for example, if you want stamps, you can find them at TABAC shops on the streets. If you need medication, you can find them at Pharmacies that usually have a green flashing cross visible on the streets. They also have special fruit/vegetable stands, stores that sell only meats, and bakeries were you can get fresh bread and pastries. Grocery stores have a number of these items, but some of the food isn't as fresh as in the little shops. Corte Ingles has just about everything, but is really expensive.

Wineshopping: "Sacred Wines"

written: 29 December 2000
If you happen to walk behind the Gothic Cathedral, or you're actually staying at the Hostal Layetana (its right accross from it), and you want to bring back some alcoholic beverage as a souvenir, a nice place to shop is the "Vins i Caves la Catedral". They have a very good selections of Spanish wines, Cavas and spirits. and its really not expensive. If you have any questions, the employees will be more than happy to help. It is very small inside though, but thats because the bottles take up all the space!

Pros: Nice selection, and not expensive
Cons: Can't think of any right now!

Celler Mas Saloni: "Where to buy wine"

written: 07 November 2000
I know this cellar 'cos it's very close to my house. I've always bought Spanish wines there, so I don't know much about their selection on foreign wines. I have to say that they have plenty of Spanish wines and they're always open to recommend and guide you which wine will be the best for your occasion. Good place to go. They sell wines, cava and spirits, but I always go for the wine ;)

Pros: Great service
Cons: none
Rating: 4/4

Champion and Corte Ingles: "Grocery Stores in Barcelona"

written: 20 September 2000
If you´re visiting Barcelona and don´t want to go to restaurants your obvious alternative are gorcery stores. When I first came to Barcelona i had a hard time finding grocery store since they are always hidden in side streets, or they are only little mini shops. And the other problem is the opening hours. So, my salvation was Champion and the grocery store in Corte Ingles (the big department store). Both are open relatively late. Champion until 9:15 pm and Corte Ingles until 9:30 or 10pm. Champion is on The Ramblas right below Plaza Catalunya (Catalunya Subway stop). You can miss it. Corte Ingles is directly on the Plaza Catalunya, just a bit Northeast of Champion... Both are really large stores and you should be able to find all you want. They accept credit cards, but i don´t think they take American Express.

Pros: big grocery stores, open late
Cons: none

Mercat de Sant Antoni on Sunday morning: "A book/comic market like the old times"

written: 29 August 2000
Every Sunday morning, the Mercat de Sant Antoni is closed inside -you can't go grocery shopping. But around it, lots of little stands are selling old books, magazines, comics and all kind of paper stuff. It's very interesting to see and you might even be able to find rare and unique stuff. I would go if I were you. It's truly interesting.

Pros: Interesting, old stuff, fun.
Cons: You might find lots of crap.
Rating: 4/4
Details: Take the metro. The stop is Mercat de Sant Antoni. Purple line.
