When studying in bilbao it's hard to get bored, there is always something to do and the nightlife is just great.
Bilbao has the perfect city size, it's not too small and not too big everything is within walking distance.
For finding housing one should go to Infojuve they will help you with a smile.
Pros: Always something happening and everythinng is near
Cons: The pro ETA demonstrations, don't let them scare
Rating: 3/4

Guggenheim cafeteria: "Surprisingly good!"

Surprisingly, we had the best meal here that we had in the whole of Spain. It cost more than we'd normally spend for lunch ($16 Australian each - forgot the Spanish price), and it was the meal of the day - no choices. First was a vegetable soup - obviously freshly made, and delicious. Then a baked lamb shank on mashed potato with gravy. Sounds simple, but it was divine - incredibly tender, with creamy mashed potato. Last was a chocolate mousse (ok)and coffee. Plus a big bottle of Cava with the meal. Pretty good value, local style food, cooked extremely well, and lots of it. Not the substandard tourist food you'd often expect! Plus Spain generally is not big on vegetables with meals, and that might be why we enjoyed the vege soup and the mashed potato so much!
Pros: Excellent value, beautifully cooked,& vegetables!
Cons: Not a cheap lunch.

Guggenheim Museum: "Amazing imagination!"

If you love amazing architecture, or are visually oriented, you'll love this museum. I took 3 rolls of film outside the building! Every angle is different, and its hard to believe someone actually designed this thing (albeit with the help of aeronautical CAD program). Every hour, for 5 minutes, "clouds" appear from under the bridge in front of the museum, and get wafted around, creating a very atmospheric effect. Its worth asking what time the next one happens, and hanging around to watch (more great photos). The exhibitions vary, and were good when we went. But the building itself is a lot of fun, especially if you like trying to take arty photos. We spent the day there and really enjoyed it. I could have spent another day there to absorb the art a bit more. (Someone else found this boring - maybe they're not into architecture.) Also interesting is the contrast with the run down city nearby and on the way to/from the airport.
Pros: Visually exciting
Cons: Must like architecture/art
Rating: 4/4
Details: Bus from airport. Bus back leaves same street opposite arrival point.

Isla Maria, San Sebastián / Donostia: "San Seabastián, north of Bilbao"
written:

San Sebastián has a nicely rounded bay, cut deep into the sedimentary terrain. Slightly to the outer part of the "middle" of the circle is Maria's Island. You can get there by taxi-boat, which is to be found on the right-hand brim of the bay when facing the ocean. The boat leaves every half an hour (cheap prices). In the Summer, you can bathe there, but there is also a couple of paths all around the (small) island. In the midlle, there is a very friendly open-air bar, where you can can have the chance to taste the local PATXARAN (pronounced patch-a-rrrann) to its full.
Pros: cheap
Cons: many tourists, worth seeing even with bad weather
Rating: 3/4

useful to know: "basque country"
written:
10 November 2000
San Sebastián, or Donostia for the Basques (this is Basque Country, buy a sticker of the Basque flag and stick it on your back-pack somewhere visible and the locals will be friendly), is north of Bilbao. Here, peolple speak Basque and are dead proud of it. Avoid the police station (guardia civil) if u can, as they have a bad tendency to get blown up by the independists. By the way, politics is a very sensible issue: be careful with whom u talk to about it. Basic words for Basque can be found on: http://www.elite.net/~runner/jennifers/language.htm
