what to do in this tiny town: "the arctic circle welcomes you!"

written: 21 November 2001
I've visited Kiruna twice in the past 2 years. Once in the middle of the winter, and once in the middle of the summer. I would recommend both-- this town is charming whether it's bright all night or dark all day... Keep yourself busy with the miniature golf course, and you *must* stay at the yellow house.

Pros: a BREATHTAKING city without the annoying tourists
Cons: not so much do to after 1am when the 2 bars close
Rating: 4/4
Details: Cheap student stand-bye tickets-- less than $25 each way! www.sas.upenn.edu/~sesteind/kiruna.html

Ice Hotel: "rein deer and ice hotel"

written: 28 June 2000
You probably know about Kiruna but you didn't even know. The infamous ice hotel is very near Kiruna, in Jukkasjärvi. They start building the hotel in November and it's definitely worth a trip, if not to sleep there -you can actually sleep there on a rein deer skin!, click on the link further down- at least to see it. Absolut Vodka did a whole ad campaign there with top models and everything.
I also suggest that you go and to see some rein deer herd and maybe do some ski-doo on the frozen lakes, really cool. Ask at the tourist office.
Rent a cheap room in Kiruna and take buses in the area.

Pros: Unique, past the arctic circle!
Cons: cold, cold and not a lot of clubs around :)
Rating: 4/4

Tourist Information: "Aurora Borealis - for the adventurous traveller"

written: 28 June 2000
This is a definite must see for the adventurous traveller who doesn't mind hiking outside in the cold winter's air above the Arctic Circle...at night! In Kiruna, you can see the Northern Lights usually from October to the end of winter, but it's best if you walk somewhat out of the city area so that the lights from the city don't hamper the wondrous light show in the sky! Go to the space base by bus (get details from the tourist info) to find out whether they are likely to appear over the coming nights. This requires a bit of adventurous spirit and a bit of perseverance, but once you see the fabulous swirling lights in the sky, you won't regret the effort!

Pros: a one in a million adventure
Cons: cold, must persevere, not guaranteed to show

"The largest city in the world"

written: 16 June 2000
Kiruna used to be the biggest city in the world if you compare by city area. I think that gives you a bit perspective when you think that a city of 26000 people is in the same league as MKexico city an Beijing.

Pros: -
Cons: -
