"HOLIDAY HOME RENT BANGKOK VACATION HOUSE RENTAL ACCOMMODATION THAI"

written: 27 January 2007
Brand new holiday 5 bedroom teak wood home in Bangkok Taling Chan district. It's by Thanon Wongwan Rob Nok and by the Klong Bang Tal - 5 minutes drive to South Bus Terminal (towards Kanchanaburi, Cha Am, Hua Hin, Phuket, Krabi and Malaysia) on Thonburi & 15 minutes to Chao Phraya River, Khaosan Rd, the Old King's Palace & the Wat Pho. There is also a frequent bus 556 to Suvarnabhumi Airport. Pictures on request. check it out on google maps: lat=13.79381307 latitude lon=100.408499781 longitude Around are traditional houses with orchards, gardens, peace and clean air. Suit family with children and animals as the place is safe and has a terrace under the elevated on stilts house. Goes cheap, even short let - as I can't go on holidays to Bangkok as often as I use to go. At the moment stays there my daughter with her children, but she can move to my sister in law house just the next door. Daily $30, weekly $100, monthly $300. A much better option of staying in Bangkok than the town centre, with it's noise, pollution, traffic jams and crowds of tourists. In a Taling Chan home-stay you will immerse yourself in a traditional lifestyle and learn a little bit about Thai culture and customs. Walks through the fruit orchards and flower groves make a very challenging experience. You can feel here like living in the traditional thai willage - yet 5 minutes walk is 7/11 shop, cash machine and a daily street market. A short ride there is a famous traditional thai floating market in Taling Chan by the Chakphra Canal. There are several nice homestays in that area - old thai teak wood houses on stilts just overlooking slowly moving canals. You are in the middle of verdant and vast, lush gardens. There is nothing comparable to it in the whole of Thailand - a dream student home stay or a holiday accommodation. http://massagelondon.org

"DON'T pay too much!!!"

written: 13 August 2001
I never pay more than 30 Baht/hour for internet. On the main tourist roads it is normaly 60 Baht and sometimes I have seen up to 120 Baht! Don't pay that, 30 Baht is just a couple of streets off the main tourist ones.

Pros: Cheap
Cons: none

"More on the Terrifying Tuk-Tuks"

written: 13 August 2001
Well, here is an update on the not-so-wonderful Tuk-Tuks. Yes, at first they are nice but the originality wears off really quick. But what you must really watch out for is the 10 Baht tours and the really cheap rides. They will stop off at various clothing stores and make you stay there for up to 15 minutes and they will often make you go to "just one more". It gets very very old very very quick. And unless it is a very long trip across town don't pay more than 40 Baht or so without the stopovers, you must be very clear about "no stops". I recommend the bus or just walk.

Pros: fast
Cons: not-so-cheap anymore, sometimes no-so-fast either.

"Keep cool in the heat!"

written: 11 June 2001
Thai people seem to shower in the early evening- right around when the sun goes down, before dinner. Perhaps this is to cool off after the peak of the heat. One way you can tell they've had a shower is when they step out onto the street with damp hair just combed and a body covered in talcum powder. Apparently talcum powder rubbed over your body after showering will keep you cooler for a longer period of time - staves of the sweat, I guess. I tried it a few times and it seemed to work :-)

Pros: keep cool!
Cons: covered in white powder

"Bargains Galore"

written: 13 November 2000
Chatuchak is where all the bargains are but the great finds are buried under lots of inferior merchandise so you must scour the place for the best deals. I was able to buy beautiful Thai silk blouses at 100 baht each. And some canvass bags in bright red and orange for 75 baht each. But the place was unbelievably crowded (it's Bangkok's version of Divisoria), not the perfect place for a conditional clautrophobe like me. I found some beautiful sarong at the night market in Pat Pong. Thankfully I've been warned that the prices at the night market were up to 500% higher than usual so I haggled accordingly. I also liked the products found at the World Trade Center (at the open market outside of the building). A rather late discovery was the basement bargain center at the Gaysorn building where I found some beautiful woodcarvings and shawl. But by then I've exhausted almost all of my supply of baht so I had to postpone what I'd imagine to be another baht-breaking shopping spree.

Pros: low prices, beautiful merchandise
Cons: thick crowd. keep your money in a safe place.

Did you ever see Pinnoccio? Remember when he went to that amusement park for bad boys and girls? Didn't it seem to good to be true? Well a place like that really does exist. Its called Bangkok. Where all your deep desires and wishes are forfiled. But remember, like Pinnoccio if your too bad your turn into a broke down on your luck muel. Going there this Feb. PARTY!

"Unexpected airport passenger charge"

written: 25 October 2000
Make sure you keep 500 baht on you for the passenger charge as you enter through customs. It comes as a bit of a surprise to travellers who have already paid their departure taxes etc., but don't despair if you don't have any money on you - they let you have access to an ATM to withdraw some more. So I guess just make sure you have enough in your account at the end of your trip!

Pros: nothing good about this
Cons: in addition to departure tax - what's going on?

"No Feet!"

written: 10 October 2000
Feet are considered the dirtiest and least important part of the body. So, a little tip to keep you on your toes in Bangkok! 1. Feet are not to be the topic of conversation. 2. Feet must not be used to point at an object or person (especially someone's head) 3. Do not show the soles of your feet (e.g. putting them on top of a table, crossing your legs, etc) 4. Do not step over anyone or over anyone's food.

"Cheap food"

written: 21 August 2000
Staying in Khoa San Road? Short of cash? Unfortunately the quality of the food tends to vary on Khoa San, because travelers eat anything. If you give bad food to the Thais there will be hell to pay. I found that the food available at the Thammasat University cafeterias was very good and around half the cost of the cheapest food on Khoa San. The campus is a short walk from Khoa San road. It's also a great place to meet Thai students and there're a few places where you can hangout next to Chao Phraya River.

Pros: Cheap
Cons: Can be very crowded

"Sunset on Chao Phraya river"

written: 20 August 2000
Bangkok, so famous for its traffic and pollution and known generally as an ugly dirty city, but Bangkok does have its moments. For a beautiful sun set experience just jump on the last boat before dark from Banglamphu (If you're staying in that area, the dock is on Phra Athit road) down river towards Sathorn Bridge. On a weekday around this time it's rush hour, a hellish time to be out and about in Bangkok, but on the river it's a different experience. From the boat in the golden light even the grid locked traffic on the bridges look beautiful. Be aware that boats tend to stop operating shortly after dark.

"Tuk tuk me away"

written: 23 June 2000
A typically Thai method of transport in Bangkok (and beyond) is the three wheeled tuk tuk - particularly practical on short journeys (the shorter the better, given that you are exposed to plenty of pollution...noise and air). You need to have your wits about you when you take a tuk tuk - drivers tend to speak less English than taxi drivers, they can take you to places you donīt want to go (usually gem stores, where they get a commission) and there have been some isolated incidents of robbery on women passengers late at night.

Pros: Cheap, quick
Cons: Pollution, safety
Rating: 2/4

"Water transportation"

written: 23 June 2000
While buses are the primary source of public transport in Bangkok, the boats (or water taxis) are an interesting alternative (as cheap as buses, and you avoid the traffic jams). Boat services are very regular although the range of destination is limited by the water ways themselves. You can save a lot of time by the boats - for example, a trip from Banglamphu to the GPO will take about half an hour by water, half what it would take on land.

Pros: Cheap, quick, alternative city view
Cons: Limited range of places covered
Rating: 2/4

"Koh Sanh Road"

written: 20 June 2000
Koh Sanh Road is the travellers mecca of South East Asia. It is hard to avoid the place, no matter how many negative things you have heard about it. Why so unavoidable? It kind of sucks you in, with a plentiful supply of budget accommodation options, and cheap eats. The adrenalin of the place that attarcts first time travellers and experienced travellers alike will get me back there.

Pros: Cheap, good food options, central location
Cons: Over crowded with tourists
Rating: 3/4
