Night market, Chatuchak, etc.: "Bargains Galore"
written:
13 November 2000
Chatuchak is where all the bargains are but the great finds are buried under lots of inferior merchandise so you must scour the place for the best deals. I was able to buy beautiful Thai silk blouses at 100 baht each. And some canvass bags in bright red and orange for 75 baht each. But the place was unbelievably crowded (it's Bangkok's version of Divisoria), not the perfect place for a conditional clautrophobe like me. I found some beautiful sarong at the night market in Pat Pong. Thankfully I've been warned that the prices at the night market were up to 500% higher than usual so I haggled accordingly. I also liked the products found at the World Trade Center (at the open market outside of the building). A rather late discovery was the basement bargain center at the Gaysorn building where I found some beautiful woodcarvings and shawl. But by then I've exhausted almost all of my supply of baht so I had to postpone what I'd imagine to be another baht-breaking shopping spree.
Pros: low prices, beautiful merchandise
Cons: thick crowd. keep your money in a safe place.
