HEB Central Market: "Great grocery store & good cafe."

written: 24 January 2001
What can I say? This is THE place to go grocery shopping in Austin! It is just a sensory overload, as you smell fresh bread, fresh flowers, coffee, spices, and more! The store is unique in that it tries to stock organic and naturally grown food items. And the floor plan of this huge store lets you have a shopping adventure as you weave in and out of aisles full of wonderful food! Stop by the café area and grab lunc... and if the day is nice, sit out on the patio under the oak trees.

Pros: great selction, fresh food & GREAT LUNCH STOP
Cons: always crowded, parking always full
Rating: 4/4

Freebirds World Burrito: "Try to devour The Monster!"

written: 11 October 2000
Wow. What great burritos! "Custom-made" to your specifications, these burritos will satisfy any hunger. The Monster can easily feed a family of 4 (OK, more like 2 very hungry people)! The fillings are fresh and the choices many: chicken or beef, black beans, beans or refried, green or red sauce (or super hot sauce), pico de gallo, cilantro, onions, Spanish rice, and more… as you can see, you soon run out of room! Come hungry!

Pros: sooo much burrito, little dinero
Cons: sooo much burrito

Bicycling in Austin: "Two-wheelin' in A-town"

written: 21 September 2000
The City of Austin maintains over 60 bicycle paths across the city thru its Bicycle and Pedestrian Program--and it keep adding more! Unlike many Texas towns, Austin is very bike-friendly. Just ask Lance Armstrong, Austin resident and 2-time winner of Le Tour de France.

Taqueria Arandinas: "Gorditas make you gordo!"

written: 21 September 2000
Located in the shopping center across the street from Round Rock high school Taqueria Arandinas servers up authentic interior Mexican food in sharp contrast to the Tex-Mex places one can find all over Austin. Horchata, gorditas, tacos de sesos, agua de tamarindo...Why did it take me so long to find it?

Pros: The waitresses are fluent in Spanish!
Cons: The waitresses are fluent in only Spanish.
Rating: 4/4

A Great Walking City: "Austin: A Great City"

written: 12 August 2000
Everything in Austin is really close. So, there really isn't any need for a car. Walking from one part of the city to another takes about 15 minutes, but worth the walk. The capitol buildings reside in the heart of the city, is quite beautiful and partially resembles Washington. D.C. The ambience of the city is really good. Guadalupe Street is the place to go in regards to great shopping and eating. The bus passes are around $1 roundtrip.

Pros: Everything is close, cheap bus pass
Cons: The airport is about 20 minutes from the city
Rating: 3/4

"A Liberal University Town"

written: 31 July 2000
Austin, despite being the capital of normally conservative Texas, is a very open-minded city full of liberal-minded university students, professors and other free spirits. Anything goes here and dress is unusually relaxed (sandals, shorts and t-shirts for almost all occasions). Residents are also usually outdoor enthusiasts due to the surrounding area's terrain and landscape. It's great for biking (just ask Lance Armstrong who is from Austin), spelunking, rock climbing and water sports (the Colorado River runs through the city and Lake Travis is nearby).

Congress Avenue Bats: "Bat Capital of America"

written: 14 July 2000
Even those squeamish of bats can quickly come to appreciate the beauty of these creatures as they fly out in a spiral from their roost under the Congress Avenue Bridge each evening at twilight. Come early and grab a spot on the lawns near the bridge or on the bridge itself. Some facts: the 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats living under the bridge are the largest urban bat colony in North America. Peak season is August, when the baby bats are born.

Pros: A rare treat to see!
Cons: crowded
Rating: 3/4

"Barton Springs Pool"

written: 14 July 2000
A natural pool that stays a chilly 68-degrees F all year round as a result of being fed by underground springs. The pool is a favorite spot to cool off in the summer and there is no chlorine to sting the eyes! Adult admission is $2.50/weekdays, $2.75/weekends.

Pros: good place for some outood fun
Cons: water's a little cold!
Rating: 3/4

An Austin favorite, Kim Phung is THE place to go for huge bowls of really cheap vermicelli. The dishes are fresh and taste great.

Kerbey Lane Cafe: "Great late-night stop!"

written: 14 July 2000
Situated in an old house and open 24 hours, Kerbey Lane is the place to go after a late night out at the bars or on the dance floor. They serve good, old fashioned breakfast and the tall stack of pancakes can feed a small city. The rest of the food is pretty decent too though. Also good for brunch but the crowds are huge! An Austin tradition…

Pros: breakfast all day long, unique, the pancakes
Cons: often crowded
Rating: just a tip
