"Best Sushi in Baltimore"
written:
31 December 2007
Located on a side-street off York Road near Towson University, Sushi Hana is an unpretentious Japanese restaurant that features the best and freshest sushi in Baltimore. The service is quick, the prices are fair, the ambience is somewhat stark unless you ask to be seated in the back room.

"Small elegant hotel"
written:
29 August 2001
Fells Point is the neighborhood where Edgar Allen Poe allegedly died in the gutter as an impoverished alcoholic.
I believe he must have passed to his greater reward at the corner of Thames and Broadway, the site of the Admiral Fell Inn.
This is a hotel with European charm and elegance that provides a personal touch. It is convenient to the center of nightclub / bar life in Baltimore, the only extant neighborhood porno theater (the Apex), and Johns Hopkins Hospital. The local Gun store was shut down after they found that 20 percent of the handguns used in crime in Baltimore were purchased there.
If you want a true Baltimore experience, this is the place to go.
Rates are reasonable but not cheap.
Pros: Quaint, colorful neighborhood.

This is a wonderful chinese restaurant just a block from the famed Senator theater on a side street. Not a place you would find in you were not looking for it. The menu includes sushi as well as Cantonese and Schechuan cuisine. The staff are friendly, and the prices are reasonable.

Cons: Parking can be hard.

"Crabs Everywhere"
written:
07 December 2000
This little crawly crustacean is the one thing that beats out the Oriole as Baltimore's mascot. Most people have had crab before, but not the 'Baltimore Way'. Visitors usually wonder what the disposable paper tablecloth is for until a waiter or waitress dumps a bushel of steamy, heavily seasoned crabs right in the middle of the table! There are few dining experiences similar to this one; everyone picks away at the mound of critters, drinks gallons of cold beer or soda, and chats the evening away. Don't let the barbaric-looking mallet fool you... in the hands of a true Baltimorean, it is a brush in the hands of an artist. Just ask one for help, and he/she will surely be glad to teach.
Pros: a must-have experience
Cons: only in the summer

"Little Italy Gem"
written:
07 December 2000
Baltimore's Little Italy is well known for dozens of very good to excellent Italian restaurants. Of course, with fame, has come higher prices and crowds or locals and tourists.
Amiccis gets its share of the crowds, but its prices are amazingly low while the quality of its meals is still excellent. The atmosphere is less formal, more relaxed, than many Little Italy establishments, and its menu is not quite as extensive as some. But they have all the staples one expects, plus some very creative dishes unique to this busy and fun place.
Amiccis is our favorite Italian place in Nickle City, and judging from the lines on weekends, its the favorite of many other locals as well.
NOTE: Parking can be a problem in Little Italy on the weekends especially. Be prepared to drive around a bit, or park in a nearby lot and enjoy a stroll to your restaurant through this interesting Italian neighborhood.
Pros: Excellent food, reasonable prices, friendly staff
Cons: Lines on weekend evenings

Itchin for some hoppin high quality live music?
Want to see where bands like Dave Matthews, Phish and others started out? Come down to this swinging Federal Hill spot where you can watch a band from either of 2 cozy floors. It's been worn down by time and tunes but it's truly a must-see when in Baltimore.
Pros: Good Bands, cheap drinks, atmosphere, phatlocation
Cons: can get crowded, sometimes teens are there

About 25 miles west of Baltimore, you can step back 40 years for a real country American dining experience in Westminster, Maryland. Baugher's Country Restaurant serves rib-sticking, inexpensive home cooking. It's all like mama used to make on the farm. Plus they make their own ice cream and have a local fruit and vegetable market. Baugher's ain't fancy, but if you want plenty of good food on a budget, this is the place to be.
Pros: Homestyle American dishes, very inexpensive
Cons: Ambiance not a major concern.

Over the past 20 years, this has been a haven for young families and single professionals. The 1940-1950 row (aka town-) houses are built as ruggedly as a Sherman Tank, require little upkeep, and maintain good values. Rentals are not plentiful, but not hard to find. Good schools, transportation, and shopping all within easy walking distance make this an enviable location for new Baltimoreans.
Pros: Solid, family oriented neighborhood
Cons: No night life. Quiet and peasceful.

"Jimmie's of Fells Point"
written:
23 September 2000
Jimmie's is a bar, a diner, a seafood restaurant all rolled into one. It is most famous for its great high-fat breakfasts which you can swill down with a bottle of beer. Lots of Johns Hopkins doctors come here to eat so it cannot be all that likely to cause food poisoning. It is also a routine stop for presidential candidates visiting Baltimore to meet the average citizen in a photogenic setting. If you are visiting Baltimore, put this on your list for good breakfasts, and quick lunches or dinners.
Pros: Great atmosphere, big portions
Cons: Not recommended for people on low-cholesterol diet

"A City of Neighborhoods..."
written:
23 August 2000
Baltimore definitely is a city of neighborhoods. The size of the city (not too big, not too small) makes it the perfect place to find your own personal space... From Charles Village, steps from J. Hopkins campus to Mt. Vernon... beautiful restored mansions, to Fells Point (bars, bars, bars... good luck finding parking)there really is something for everyone. Prices are great too... Take a look at some of the lesser know areas... Highlandtown, Hamilton, etc.
Ethnically, Baltimore is one of the most diverse places I have ever lived, and I grew up in NY. More to tell, but give it a try yourself, and you'll see!!
Pros: Variety is the spice of life
Cons: So much to choose from... :-)

"Another great Market..."
written:
23 August 2000
At one time, Baltimore was a city of MANY markets. Sadly, many have closed down now. If you go, in addition to the wonderful Cross St. Market already mentioned here, don't miss the best, the biggest, the oldest, the funkiest (IMO) one... Lexington Market. No pretention, just lots of great food, atmosphere, and just a bit of on-the-edge taste of danger as well. Right on the Metro Line, just a few blocks up from Camden Yards. I've been away from Baltimore for close to a year now, and real, honest to goodness, non-touristy, real-life places like Lex. Market are the kind of things I miss the most about B'more... Enjoy!
Pros: The real McCoy... If you can't find it there...
Cons: Be careful, but not overly so...

"The Senator Theater"
written:
10 August 2000
This historical landmark is one of the last theater's of it's kind. It's an old old venue with more seats than any other theater I've seen (879). John Water's opens every movie of his there... and every big film (other than over hyped Hollywood garbage) does as well. If you go to Baltimore, nothing will give you a feel for the city's culture and pride like this grand theater.
Pros: Throwback to classical film era
Cons: Not a huge movie selection as with other theaters
