The Washington National Zoo is one of my favourites. When you visit, make sure to check out the rainforest exhibit. There are these miniature monkeys who run around inside and come close enough to be held. (although you probably shouldn't)

The Vietnam War Memorial is pretty simple, but it provides a humbling and symbolic reminder of the impact of war, with the names of all the US soldiers who died during the conflict (around 60,000, I think).
