Resume/CV Model - USA
Cover Letter | Cover Letter Model | CV | CV Model | Internet

There are two different types of resumes you can use:

Chronological
  • List your work experience from most to least recent in chronological order with:
    1. your title
    2. the name of the company you worked for
    3. the dates of your employment
    4. a brief description of your achievements in that job
  • This type of CV is good if your professional career has been very stable, without long pauses (no matter if you have a lot or very little professional experience).
  • If you don't have a lot of professional experience, it's better to use this kind of CV, highlighting your academic studies first and then your professional career. Then, follow the same structure recommended: Languages, Publications, Computer knowledge, etc...

Functional
  • As an alternative, you may list your work experience in what is known as a functional resume in which you break up your experience into different categories. The more relevant the categories are to the job and the employer, the better. Sample categories which would be relevant only for applying for some jobs (the following would apply to jobs related to teaching, film or childcare):
    1. "Overseas Teaching Experience"
    2. "Film and Video Experience"
    3. "Experience Teaching Children"
  • This type of CV is for people whose job situation has been unstable. This way, the blank periods are less obvious.
  • When applying for a particular position, the functional CV is good because it concentrates on what's needed for the job. The person from the company who reads it is better able to notice your abilities in a specific area.
  • You can creatively point out your strengths in this type of resume.
  • In the "Work Experience" section, you should group jobs similar to one another and relevant to the position you are applying for together in blocks. Examples:

    - Experience in sales:

    • Position. Company. Dates. Duties.
    • Position. Company. Dates. Duties.

    - Experience in international affairs:
    • Position. Company. Dates. Duties.
    • Position. Company. Dates. Duties.
