I spent more on telephone because I was calling internationally, and more on nightlife/travel because I was going out more often to see the city. Housing was cheaper because we stayed with host families who cooked for us.
Travel, Nightlife, Telephone: was more expensive than at home.
Food, Overall: was the same price as at home.
Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Stay with a host family! ATMs charge a percentage of the money you take out.

Personal spending habits:
Food in France is generally cheaper in the stores than it is in North America, that's not the case in restaurants. In terms of phone usage, I kept that to a minimum, sending e-mails instead. Rent is generally cheaper in Nantes than it is in Ottawa. Nightlife and travel cost me more in France because I went out more often and travelled around Europe everytime I had a break.
Travel, Nightlife: was more expensive than at home.
Overall: was the same price as at home.
Food, Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
If you intend on travelling around Europe get a rail pass before leaving home and if you're travelling through France get the "Carte 12-25" it can cut the cost of train tickets in half. Also, make sure you bring 8 or 10 photos (passport size) with you before you go because almost every institution you'll deal with will require one. Something that is very important, make sure to have access to two accounts, if for some reason you lose one of your debit cards or one of your banks has a computer problem you find yourself strapped for cash in a foreign country.

When studying abroad, you travel and go out more to experience new things and meet new people, it's just natural! As Nantes is only 2 hours away from Paris by train, I went to Paris on several occasions and you definitely spend more money there! As to telephone expenses, I had an internet connection at home and it was the source of most of these expenses. Also most of my calls were international. I spent less on food because the prices are better than at home. My accomodation was more expensive than my present one at home, because I lived in a "hotel residence" where several services were included in the rent and the studio was fully equipped, including microwave-oven and TV with 20+ channels.
Travel, Nightlife, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Overall: was the same price as at home.
Food: was less expensive than at home.
