HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I didn't particularly get along with my korean roommate since she couldn't speak chinese and the rooms were dirty.
Personal comments:
I lived there only for a while. I thought it wasn't too bad, I expected worse. We had washing machines, even though nothing really washed clean.. But other foreigners had trouble adjusting. And life without airconditioning can be rough. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
The books suck, they don't teach you the chinese you really need in real life. Finding a tutor is easy and I recommend it, you can supplement your curriculum. If you think the classes are too easy it's really hard to skip to a higher class, but it's worth it.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
I would go study at a university with more chinese students. I wished foreign students could take part in their classes. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Chinese
Was learning Chinese a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Chinese How much did you improve your Chinese?
My level before: Did not speak it My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
At the start it seemed like an impossible task, but the satisfaction of using more and more words each day and understanding the sometimes harsh Beijing dialect made it extremely rewarding. Communication was imperative as hardly any people in Beijing or at university speak English, so you have to learn; fast. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Calling overseas is still very pricey and I spent more on housing in order for me to live at the same level of standard as I would in Australia or Holland. Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Take the subway instead of taxis if you want to go to the CBD. Imported goods can be very expensive (import tax) This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
When visiting mainland China, there is never enough room for souvenirs. Travel light! In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Beijing Language and Culture University is one of MYRIAD language schools in Beijing. However, it is among the most reputable. From my experience, BLCU's strong reputation seems well-deserved. That being said, there may be less costly ways to learn Mandarin. A classmate of mine mentioned the availablity of student tutors for 10 RMB per hour (about CDN $2). The obvious benefit here, aside from the low cost, is the effectiveness of one-on-one learning. I'd recommend considering tutoring in CONJUNCTION with a language course, such as at BLCU. Although class sizes may seem unwieldy (15 to 25 students), the classes at BLCU provided a well-structured approach. No regrets. FINAL COMMENTS
Make the most of your time! Everyone's priorities will be unique. However, try to find the right balance between mainstream social activities (e.g., nightlife), and language- & culture-oriented activities (access to which may be more limited to your period of stay in Beijing).
