HOUSING
by Frank, University of Westminster, London, United Kingdom
Business Studies, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Prices for accomodation in apartments/houses are reasonable in Paris compared to London.
Personal comments:
University gave us a list with housing agencies, other places to find flats and a few vacancies they knew of prior to our arrival. Number of vacancies could have been a bit larger but otherwise very good service. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
The so called Gala Dauphine, which takes place only once every year and can't be missed! At Dauphine, the student associations organize lots of journeys, studentevenings and lots of other events which are always very amusing and with a great atmosphere. ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
At least for me the priority was to learn how to speak french really, and then it's a good idea to take courses where you have to work in teams. There are two reasons; first, that's how you get to know local students, and second, it helps you a great deal to passe the courses. The local students knows how to work and what the teachers expect to get good grades.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
As (almost) always, it's the bureaucracy that causes the problems, if there are any. Furthermore, the teachers were often very late to let the students know the results of the exams, which could be very annoying. For instance, if you don't know the results of the midterm exams when you're supposed to study for the final ones. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French How much did you improve your French?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
I chose two language courses in French. One course thaught by the head of the institute of French was excellent. It was the most and maybe the only completely satisfying course I attended in Paris. Through this education I was able to improve my French skills sharply. The communication with other students was rather easy and it was fun. In fact, the improvement of language was the only positive aspect in relation to academic education at DAUPHINE. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Main source of funding:
Government assistance Other sources of funding:
Family Personal savings Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work Personal spending habits:
The night life here is very expensive!! At home I don't pay for food very often because of the meal plan, and the telephone is free within the same town. In Paris you pay to call your neighbor. Travel however is much cheaper. Food, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Travel, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Dauphine has a huge computer resource center--it's better to go there than to an internet café! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
How difficult and depressing the PDD really can be... In my opinion:
I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
Dauphine is a name talking to almost everyone in France! Its reputation is undisputed! On the other hand, lots of hard work attends any students wanting to profit from this reputation. FINAL COMMENTS
Interested students should carefully consider the pros and cons of a participation in the PDD mentioned above. Travel tips: Paris offers you a lot - may be more than you can see during 1,5 years. Unfortunately there isn't a lot of time to travel and discover the country. One should definitely participate in the following events: - Ski-Etudes, one week in March(?!) in the snow with courses at the face you have to attend to get to ski pass! Great experience! - Week end d'integration, students communities organise these events at the start of the academical year. You leave Paris for a non-stop party - 2/3 unforgettable days where you definitely get in contact with many cool people... This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
