Dublin City University (DCU)
DCU, 9 Dublin, Ireland
Description:
The University is located on a fifty acre campus in the northern suburbs of Dublin. Most of the University's programmes are provided in new, purpose-built buildings designed specifically for their needs, while the University's engineering programmes are currently housed largely in the older buildings on campus, some of which date back to the establishment of the Albert Agricultural College in the last century. The latter have been extensively refurbished and modernised. The campus with its adjoining parks constitutes a pleasant and productive environment for study and research.

HOUSING
by Ignacio, ICADE, Madrid, Spain

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Independence, near the campus and pretty new. its a residence called Shanowen Hall, just like on campus residence but better in terms of independence and facilities.
Personal comments:
The University could have helped more in housing services. The situation has changed this year, as there are two new residences near the university campus that are prety good. Last year there were not such student residences, and housing was based in looking for houses near the University. The houses in dublin are quite old and many facilities. The University residence is only able to accomodate 30% of the students, so the new residences have been very handy, also to lower prices, as housing prices in Dublin are quite high. STUDENT LIFE
by Gonzalo, ICADE, Madrid, Spain

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
As I lived in Dublin for one year I will say that it depends on what you are looking for. But there three main events that you should not miss if you live in Dublin; they are: Halloween, it is really good as everyone dress up, 2. The six nation, it is the most important Rugby tournament in Europe and finally, St Patricks day... it is the national party and everyone is Irish for that day, no matter where you come from, the Irish spirit will get inside you. Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. How much did you improve your English?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
Obviously being with other foreigners that don't speak your own language oblige you to improve your english (for me). Playing volley ball was for me a really good opportunity to improve this language. Indeed we are an international team: i play with irish, german people, and my coach is italian. And through the lectures, and team works, it is necessary to be able to express our ideas in english...so i would say that in general i really improved my level, as in oral communication and writtings This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

The accessibility of student needs

Personal savings Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
Irland IS very very expensive. The accomodation situation in Dublin is strained - they can let whatever they want. Food is approx. 20 % more expensive than at home. Nightlife as well - entrance fees up to 7 Euros are quite normal. Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Telephone: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
The bus ticket is really a financial surprise - too expensive for students. Saving tip: buy a bike if you live close to the university. Its also great fun to cycle around with friends - and its also a cheap way to come to the city center and back ;-) =>taxis are expensive and its hard work to catch one during the weekend. Personal recommendation:
Be aware of the academic fields you study. As for me, business studies was grant. But other fields may not be as great. FINAL COMMENTS
