Travel around Europe is very impressive; French goverment is really thoughtful and it provides housing allowance even for international students, that is grateful. Read Review

Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? - no accomodation offered by ESC Rennes - CROUS housing had bad reputation - independence from others
Personal comments:
- no official housing - website provides students with offers from private landlords - CROUS and other prearranged housing possibilities are available

Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Activities, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
Social life in Rennes is very much what you make of it. There is a large international community in the city, which is much welcomed by the local people. The city has many bars, alledgedy you can drink in a different bar each day of the year. The city centre, especially Rue St. Michel, also know as the 'Rue de Soif', is packed with bars and cafes, all very individual and friendly. Rennes plays host to a number of festivals which really shouldn't be missed, including the annual Transmusicales (live music weekend) and regular 'Fest Noz' evenings. Not quite so exciting but a cultural event not to be missed is the weekly market on a Saturday morning, which takes over the city. The seafood is incredible, and the traders love us international students!

How much did you improve your French?
My level before: Did not speak it
My level after: At ease in most situations
Personal comments:
France is of course a French-speaking country, but in business schools, we only have courses in English in order to adapt to the international business environment. So did I. Thus at the first year, I hardly learned french, but the second year during my internship in a local french company, I kept learning french and I am still learning french now so that my french improve greatly that I can read, write, listen and speak. I will keep improving it, I love this language.

Other sources of funding:
An ERASMUS grant
Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience
Personal spending habits:
I considered my year studying abroad as a once-in-a-lifetime experience and so did not consider the financial implications of my activities as much as I might have done at home. My main expense came from travelling, as I took advantage of being on the European mainland. I do not regret spending more on my year abroad, as I had an incredible year and have benefitted enormously in so many ways.
Travel, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Food, Nightlife: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
Apply for your CAF (government grant to students) early. I received 150 Euros a month from the French government, which helped a great deal with my rent. A lot of money can be saved by buying as much as you can from the local market rather than supermarkets, and food is often of a much higher quality too. I didn't have too many financial surprises. Travel was a lot cheaper than expected: a student railcard can save you 50% on domestic and international travel. The only negative surprise I had was my English mobile phone bill. Even if you do not use your phone you are charged everytime somebody leaves a message on your voicemail. I would recommend leaving any English mobile phones at home and getting a French phone when you arrive.

I wish I had known...
The most important thing that I wish I had known before going is language skills. Because language is the key to open another culture. For me, it is the key to find a good internship.
In my opinion:
I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
It should have been better if there is more interaction between the professors and the students.

FINAL COMMENTS

Learning local language before you go into a foreign country will help you a lot at the integration stage. Keeping in mind being optimistic will reduce the loneliness and homesickness when you are abroad.
