Languages
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French
How much did you improve your French?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Language difficulties
Administrative / Institutional
Personal comments
The Quebecois accent is ver different to the Parisian french you get taught in schools. At the beginning it can be a shock but after a coupls of weeks you get used to it. There is plenty of opportunity to improve, but if you are really stuck, you can always talk english.

Overall
I wish I had known...
In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
Important factors in my choice
(1) Unimportant – (4) Very important
Personal recommendation
I recommend HEC very highly. It is an amazingly modern business school with great courses and facilities. The interntational exchange experience here is second to none - there is a fab sense of community and lots of fun activities and trips organised.

During my experience abroad, I ...
(1) Never – (4) A lot
Became familiar with another culture
Met people from other countries
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies & career
Final comments
I had the time of my life and was very sad to leave. Travel is very easy around Canada and the US. You will meet tons of new people from all over the world, and get to experience some cool things.
The winters are freezing -40 with wind chill, so be prepared to spend some money on snow boots and a proper ski jacket. But buy out there, it is cheaper.

Everyone needs their own laptop. HEC do hire out laptops but I would advise against them.

Housing
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I would recommend that future students live in private accommodation not arranged through HEC. You will find a much larger range of choice of accommodation and better value for money. It is best to live near HEC - either Cote de Neiges or Universite de Montreal metro stops.

Personal comments
HEC can arrange it for you but I had a bad experience - I only saw 2 flats neither of which I would have chosen had I been looking myself. On the other hand, it is much easier this way.

Montreal is full of bars, clubs and restaurants of all flavours - jazz, latin, blues, dance, hiphop. There is bound to be something to suit everyone. IT is a very livley city and has the best nightlife in all Canada.
