You must be very lucky to get a good accomodation in Amsterdam. Therefore you cannot really complain...you have to take what you get.

It is very hard to find some "cheap student places". Everything is expensive,but very hip, e.g. the "Escape" on Thursday night

..because Amsterdam is a very expensive city (especially compared to Dortmund!)
Food, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Travel: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
Never shop at "Albert Hejn"...too much choice, way too expensive (Lidl or Aldi preferred!)
