KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.

Type of housing: A room exchange
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: A room exchange
Why? it was so cool to live together with other international students. We mostly lived there with 5, sometimes 8, so there was mostly somebody around to have fun with
Personal comments:
Well, my landlord was a difficult man, but in general it was okay. You also had a lot of possibilities offered by university

Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
So much!Reykjavik has everything for everyone in their mainstreet; Laugavegur. Mal og menning is a great bookstore where you can order food and coffe, and read every book and magazine in store.Circus on a night out if you want to look at funny people and Hus Malarens and 22 is two counterparts if you want to dance to different music. I could have written ten pages about fun stuff to do in that little town! Go swimming or just sit in the outdoors hot-tubs. Go to Hveragerdi and Akureyri!! Go!

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
They have good courses allright but the only problem is that they stick to language too much to extend that foreign student without good command on their language can hardly get quality education in the university.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
I think they must try to design a special english programme for foreign students because the foreign student in the are so eager to have good education but the language has become a barrier to them.

Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English
Was learning the local language a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my knowledge
How much did you improve your English?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: At ease in most situations
How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: Did not speak it
My level after: Basic phrases
Personal comments:
At the beggining it´s quite difficult to express yourself in english. But in a few weeks you can talk fluent english with no problem. The Icelandic it´s different because for people that talk a latin languaje (like me) it´s very difficult to talk fluent Icelandic. But I think that, in one year I would start to talk without feeling shy.

EXPENSES
by Daniela, Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, Vienna, Austria
Marketing and Sales Management, Erasmus
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Personal savings
Other sources of funding:
Family
Government assistance
An ERASMUS grant
Work opportunities:
I didn't want/need to work
Personal spending habits:
In Iceland the average income and so on are much more higher than in Austria. Therefore for us it is more expansive regarding all situations in the every-day life. If you want to work there its no problem to find a job which is good paid. But I didn't do that - I relied on savings and "loans".. :) I wanted to use the time here to travel and get to know the country and the people.
Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Cost saving: food: BONUS!!! (a supermarket chain with a pink pig as their sign) and don't go out to eat - cook at home... ;) regarding travelling: hitch-hiking is not that difficult, but better in the touristic season

I wish I had known...
That public transportation is not really good and that it is absolutely necessary to live close to downtown and the university if you don´t come with your car through the ferry.
In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
In general a good university, teachers are very informal and helpful. It is possible to do exams for courses offered in Icelandic in English, check with the teachers.

FINAL COMMENTS

Travel a lot!!!! You will never see such magnificent nature again. Do the golden circle, go to the Blue Lagoon, to Jökulsarlon, Snæfellsnes, Vestfirðir, Mývatn, Askja, just to name the highlights. Never underestimate the wheather. If you travel and plan to go in the winter or wanna leave the ring road, rent a 4WD!
