HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? Nice to have an Apartment - the student rooms I saw were not anywhere I could have lived. Very small and nowhere to cook food. I would though have decided to live closer to the center than I did now. I had 35 min walk into the city and the last bus into town was 20.30- too early. Would have been easier to live in the center. It was though cheaper to live a bit outside.
Personal comments:
I didn't live in the student accommodations - they were very cheap but also low standard in my opinion. Ok I guess if you do not expect too much. A lot of people actually live there. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE
by UmeaSweden, Umeå Universitet, Umeå, Sweden

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
All the bars close to the center of Montpellier are brilliant. Lots of small cafes and nice bars. Unfortunately they close early - to really party all night you have to go outside the city to the big discos. It works but can not be done every weekend. It's enough with the bars in the Center. Which ones are popular changes a lot. Just keep an eye out for posters and talk to people where to go! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
I followed the ready made study plan - best to do that otherwise it will be difficult to get all the courses to go together and fit into the schedule.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
It was all right. No books used which surprised me a bit. All information was from photocopies and notes from the lectures. Mandatory participation in all lectures (a bit too parental compared to what I was used to) but it worked out all right. The exams were fairly easy if you followed the course - you pass the exam. Language difficulties
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French How much did you improve your French?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
I've been studing french for three years, in my home country. I had french private lessons in Antibes for two months before university started in Montpellier, that helped me a lot for my studies later on. I feel very confortable with my french now, I really like the language. I'm proud to have finished my courses in french. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Personal savings Other sources of funding:
Family Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience Personal spending habits:
Utilities in France are super expensive. Watch out for EDF and FranceTelecome! But the nightlife, the TGV(train) and the food were very reasonable, even cheaper than in Canada. Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Nightlife: was the same price as at home. Food, Travel: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Once again, I suggest you apply at CAF for a rent subsidy for students. Phoning long distance with FranceTelecome was too expensive. Look for phone cards. Go to the Market - great food, cheap. And a second hand bike to get around town. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
At the begining I had problems finding a place to live, maybe it was easier to have solved that before arriving to Montpellier. But that search itself was tough but enriching experience. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
To keep the international students comming. They really make us feel welcome and it's very fun to find so many nationalities around this city. FINAL COMMENTS
For traveling as a student, there is a special card for the bus, which is very useful, it is cheaper for students and you can use the buses and the troley around the town. For the using the trains, everybody knows the train service in France is very good with the TGV is very confortable, there is also another special card you can buy that will give up to 50% discount on certain tickets. You can buy it in the train stations. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
