HOUSING
by Barbara, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland
Business Studies, Socrates exchange
Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? There is more space and freedom when living in a private appartment. I am living with a French person which is very helpful for improving my language skills.
Personal comments:
University housing is simpler than renting a private appartment because students are given a lot of help at the beginning on filling out important forms and knowing their right. I didn't have this help. University accomodation is cheaper but in Strasbourg it is usually not furnished so there are extra expenses. STUDENT LIFE
by Jorge, Marquette University, Milwaukee, United States
Business Studies, Erasmus
Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Strasbourg offered many interesting forms of entertainment. One of these was towards the end of June when a complete day and night of musical festivals takes place. You get to hear different beats and sounds from all over the globe. This is an ideal time for students to meet local people as well as visitors from other countries. ACADEMIC

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
The best courses I have taken were: European Integration (in english), s'exprimer en francais (only for foreign students), politique de communication, creation publicitaire and International Strategy and Leadership
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Some of the teachers do not teach in their native languages, which can cause problems for most of them. It should also be easier to receive feedback on personal performance. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: French
Was learning French a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my French How much did you improve your French?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
Although I marked that I knew the everyday language before I left, I had bever used it and therefore it was quite difficult for me in the beginning to speak and to understand what people said to me. I learned quite fast and I really learned a lot, although I still sometimes face problems with the language. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

EXPENSES
by Barbara, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland
Business Studies, Socrates exchange
The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Family Other sources of funding:
Personal savings An ERASMUS grant Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
I lived at home in Ireland so I didn't pay rent. I have travelled a lot here so those expenses are high. Everyday spending such as on groceries is cheaper in France and college nights out are much cheaper. Travel, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food, Nightlife: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Carte 12-25 will save on rail expenses. I spent a lot of money in the beginning on phone calls home before I found the EuroLatina card. This is by far the best international phone card. Toiletries and groceries are all cheaper in Germany. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

OVERALL

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
Strasbourg is not a typical french city. In my opinion:
I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
The social life can be very nice when you're open enough to approach the FRench students. The academic life can be a little disappointing because of its low level. FINAL COMMENTS
I am aware of the fact that staying with other int. students is a lot easier than mingle with the FRench. Nevertheless it is absolutely indispensable to get some contacts with the local (students), othwerwise you stay is only a long language holiday... If you are really interested in the French culture, language, behaviour and nation, don't stay outside... You should know that right at the beginning of the year there are 150 new young students how are looking for friends, try to meet them for example at the WE-d'Intégration. The students fro thrid year just came back from their studies abroad (compulsory at IECS) and they know how hard it is to get to know FRench students - you can meet them, too! The students from 2nd year might be interested in your hime university, because maybe they want to go there next year and would like to have a friend alreayd - they are mostly open to meet you , too!!! A perfect occasion for having fun WITH THE FRENCH are the social events (despite soirées..) and travels like "Semaine au Ski" or "Amsterdam". in my opinion you should go there! All the best!
