HOUSING

Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.

Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? Because of the great opportunity to get in contact lots of different students, not only Russian ones but also Chines, Japanese, Mongolian and African ones every day and to get to know real student life
Personal comments:
Although the whole student dormitory most often resembled a refugee camp than a student campus a appreciated the uniqe experience with hearing and speaking the Russian language all the time, because there was no other chance to communicate with the others

STUDENT LIFE
by siabel, Universität Passau, Passau, Germany
Area, Ethnic, and Cultural Studies, university partnership program
Personal social experience
Activities
KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
The best cafe i would recommend is your friends 'babushka'. You shouldn't miss invitance of your friends to their homes - it gives you an detailed inside look to the hospitality ans warmth the Russians meet you. But, there is the so-called 'Taganka' - a club where you can go on a concert or simply to dance. The Russians are quite natural in their behaviour and uncomplicated, therefore it can be a lot of fun when going out with them.

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
In the field of political history there are two very talented teachers with broad knowledga, Mr. Tom... and Mr. Stepanow. The oral exams I took at them, where a very pleasant experience. In the language education Mrs. Morozowa is the best one, who can vividly teach all tricky aspect of the Russian language. She even gave me the opportunity to attend a course, in which she taught us to teach the Russian language to foreign students.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
Refering to the first month of education separated courses with other foreign student I had wished to get a more specified education according to my abilities and not in such an absolutely mixed group. Only as I began to attend courses with other Russian students I realized improvements in my personal academic knowledge. Above this, I would appreciate more discussions in the courses and less "frontal" teaching, when the teacher is the only one who is acting.

KEY:
No problems.
I coped pretty well.
Sometimes it was difficult.
It was a constant struggle.
Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: Russian
Was learning Russian a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Russian
How much did you improve your Russian?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.)
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
Thanks to the fact that I lived in a student dormitory it was no problem at all to learn the phrases they use in everyday coomunication. My spoken language abilities have improved in such a degree that nowadays most of the Russian people I get to know do not realize that I am German. Most often they think that I am coming from the Russian province.

EXPENSES
by siabel, Universität Passau, Passau, Germany
Area, Ethnic, and Cultural Studies, university partnership program
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Government assistance
Other sources of funding:
Family
Personal savings
Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience
Personal spending habits:
When I went to Moscow I realized that gonig out there doesn't correspond to the category "Ivanovo". In Ivanovo, expect phone calls everything was very cheap including travelling.
Telephone: was the same price as at home.
Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Because of the financial crisis in Russia in August 1998 it was very difficult to receive money from the bank or to change it. Therefore, freinds that came to visit us brought money with them. But don't mind: since than, it is a lot of times that I have been to Russia. It is no problem to receive money from the credit card or the EC/ Maestro-card or to change dollars/ euros to rubels. But you' d better change in a official place like a bank, otherwise your money could vanish into thin air.
