HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? The campus was close to the faculty. I had my own privacy.
Personal comments:
The housing was good. There is one unit, which consists of two rooms, bathroom and toilette. That means, in this unit live two students, each having his own room. Sometimes it was a bit cold in there, but in general I felt comfortable. The only thing I hated was the presence of cockroaches!! STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
It is impossible to give just one spot to go for each of the sections above in Moscow. This city has so much to offer, and so many different places to visit that are equally beautiful, fascinating and fun. Some highlights were the Kremlin, Red Square, Ismaylovsky Park, Discouria (an incredible Georgian restaurant), the Tretyakov museum, all of the Churches and parks. The circus, ballet, symphonies were all incredible events! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Not all teachers are prepared to work with internationals. Just a few are pleased about the fact that there are some internationals, others are the opposite of pleased about that fact...;-)

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Russian
Was learning Russian a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Russian How much did you improve your Russian?
My level before: Did not speak it My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
I actually studied Russian two different times at Moscow State University. First from May to August 1997, then again in 1999. The language and communication aspect of each time was incredibly fascinating! The first time I went, I could not speak Russian nor could I even understand the alphabet. When I arrived, I could barely buy bread at the corner store because I just had no clue what was going on. The most incredible part of this language experience is looking back after three months and seeing for yourself what kind of progress you made. The second time, what was incredible was the initial fear of having forgotten some of the language, but once back into it you realize again how much you learned the first time. I was amazed at the fact that I could discuss philosophy with Russians by the end of my sixth month. This kind of gratification does not come along everyday, and I will appreciate that always. Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
As I accurately prepared my stay in Moscow there did not occur any unexpected circumstances. In my opinion:
I loved it but I'm not sure everybody would.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
You should know Russian at an adequate level, you should be prepared for extreme bureaucracy, long winters and sometimes unfriendly people! But you can expect having a great time of your life if you cope with the characteristics of this special country! FINAL COMMENTS
You should try to find a community of Russians and internationals, but you should preferably speak Russian with both groups. Especially internationals you should choose very carefully, as there are many foreigers in Russia who think they are better than Russians and are not disposed to cope with Russian (inconvenient) characteristics. But if you just meet such people you won't experience this fantastic country. If you have some time left you should try to find an internship in Russia as it gives you the chance to collect some (Russian) work experience!
