HOUSING
by Patricia, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Madrid, Spain

Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I actually changed houses in the second semester and chose to look for accommodation independently. I found a room in a shared apartment in the city centre.
Personal comments:
The university housing was everything I expected about it: it was spacious, clean and with every facility one could reasonably need. It was located on campus, but also next to a shopping centre and to public transport. I shared it with two American boys and a Japanese girl, and the neighbours were from all around the world, making it a trully international environment. STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
Favourite night spots have to be in the city, Three Wise Monkeys in George St and The Gaff in Oxford St are cool. Sydney is a backpacker hotspot, and most backpacker places can be found in Kings Cross. Best cafe has to be Campos in Newtown - best coffee ever! Gloria Jean's Coffees is good too. Classics like Mardi Gras or New Year's Eve are events not to be missed. Try to make it to the Open Air Cinema in January/February. My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
this university hosts a large number of international students, they seem even to dominate. It is a bit hard to find real locals, especially in the postgrad courses
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
the libary should get more funds to buy some more copies of recommended textbooks This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Yes, I wanted to improve my knowledge How much did you improve your English?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
My level of English before going to Australia was fairly good, over the general Spanish level in any case. I did experience some difficulty at the very beginning, mostly because most my encounter with the English language had been purely academic or in short touristy trips at most. But I coped pretty well, I think, and after a couple of months living in English (and Australian English at that) I did improve a lot, mostly because, aside from the classes, I took a job at a cafe which really helped me a lot in overcoming my shyness and finding a way to make myself understood. Even now, two years after coming back from Australia, I have a very good command of English and do miss the language everyday. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Family Other sources of funding:
Part-time work Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience Personal spending habits:
Everything here is more expensive than in my home country. It's not really cosly but it could leave you broke if you're not financially conscious. Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Telephone: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
You'll be spending heaps on books, so be prepared. ;) But in fact, sometimes you can just do fine without books. There's plenty of info. (Inet, library...) This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
the location (far from town) and the academic level of the university In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
more flexibility in choosing lectures and more group exercises or participation of students in class FINAL COMMENTS
my academic experience was not ideal, however, I would do the very same. In such an experience abraod, one learns more from others and people we meet than from claasses that are, at the end of the day, pretty much the same as at home This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
