Personal assessment

KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I would stay independently again, sharing a flat as I did, to get more in touch with the local people and have the independence of my own appartment. Staying in the student dorm is not bad at all, but beside sharing the sanitary facilities with all the people of one floor, socialising usually happens with fellow students from your own country or countries you know already better than the people and culture of th host country (China).
Personal comments:
The accomodation was nice. Rooms are well sized and in very good condition. The standard is very well suited for Europeans and much better than the one for local students i their dorms. During the winter period the room temperature was a problem, as I was told by friends, as the heating was only turned on for an hour a day (customary for the region). The dorm for foreign students was well situated near to coffee shops, restaurants and Internet cafes and close to other areas of interest.

Personal social experience

KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Personal comments:
The Purple Mountain park, at all seasons a beautiful site and nice for walks. The markets all over, shopping for grocery was never more interesting. The Rooster temple offers a very good view over the city from the pagoda. Orgy Bar was the favourite night haunt of the foreign student community, but as this is a matter of taste things are constantly changing at at the present time there might be another place more preferred. Szechuan style hot pot is definitely something I got addicted too!

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
Checking out courses that best suit the language proficiency was not a problem at all and changing the class after a few weeks was easily possible. Teachers are very supportive and helpfull. Overall its still a challenging language so their help and friendly teaching methods were very much appreciated.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
Maybe new media support would be a good add on, like a video library or software to write characters on the computer. Still, there's nothing that beats old fashioned manual work on character writing and reading, etc.

I wish I had known...
Not really, I travelled to China a few times before so the country was not completely alien to me.
In my opinion:
Most people loved it.

During my experience abroad, I ...
Became familiar with another culture
KEY:
Happened all the time.
Happened quite a lot.
Happened a bit.
Didn't happen.
Traveled
Improved language skills
Met people from other countries
Became more independent
Partied a lot
Experienced a change in life
Advanced my studies/career
Personal recommendation:
Very good! Good teachers, classes that suit every proficiency level and pace of learning. As I am a busines student an accompanying course i busines or economics in English with respect to China would have been an advantage. Following the ones tought i Chinese were too hard for me to understand.

FINAL COMMENTS

Everybody going to study at nanjing University shoul take the opportunity of travelling during the holidays or the weekends. Shanghai is 3 hours by trian and the connection is very good. Trains are running every hour or more often. During the holidays destinations further away are possible as well, e.g. Beijing. Finally, the Yellow Mountains south of Nanjing are definitely worth a trip (the weather is crucial to see the clouds and mountain tops in their full beauty - it's virtually the stuff of the famous ink drawings)
