HOUSING
by Monika, Fachhochschule Brandenburg, Potsdam, Germany
Business Studies, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I would go to the same place I have been again. There were a lot of students living in the same building and this made it much easier to meet new people and socialize.
Personal comments:
TOAS is the organization which helps students to find a flat in one of their buildings. In the building where I live I share a kitchen with all the people on the same floor, which are around 30. The advantage is that you meet people easily and there is always someone to talk to. The disadvantage is that it is not always as clean in the kitchen as I would like it to be - but thats of course not easy with so many people shareing one kitchen.

STUDENT LIFE
by Monika, Fachhochschule Brandenburg, Potsdam, Germany
Business Studies, Erasmus
Personal social experience
Activities
KEY:
Amazing! Hardly had time to study.
Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.
Nightlife
Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
There are many places in the city where you find a lot of exchange students. For example Cafe Europe is very famous with exchages. Koti bar is one of my favourites. Its very homely - koti means home in finish- and there are also a lot of finish people there. There are a lot of night clubs. Some good, some bad ones, but that always depends on what someone prefers.

ACADEMIC
by Julie, Ecole Supérieure de Gestion, Paris, France

My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
The courses are teaching very differently as in France, the quality of lessons was not so good on my point of view, it could be better are more hard.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.
Essays and/or projects throughout the course
Overall
Personal comments:
I think the people who were teaching us are very good professional but they haven't the quality necessay to teach, I think it was the more important problem in this school.

Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't.
Was learning the local language a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my knowledge
How much did you improve your English?
My level before: At ease in most situations
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: Did not speak it
My level after: Basic phrases
Personal comments:
By everyday communication with the international students and teachers I improved my spoken English, now I am able to express myself fluently also on the business (field of my studies) topics. I like the country and the local people so my stay in Finland encouraged me to start studyinf Finnish - Ive been already attending classes of Finnish language for two semesters.

EXPENSES
by Monika, Fachhochschule Brandenburg, Potsdam, Germany
Business Studies, Erasmus
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
Personal savings
Government assistance
An ERASMUS grant
Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options
Personal spending habits:
I spend more money on food, as the prices are higher in Finland than in Austria, especially on fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, in Austria I went home every weekend and then I did not have to buy any food myself at all. I spend more money on going out, as I just have more time to go out and from an academical point of view I am not at all as busy as I usually am in Austria. I also thought this exchange semester would be a good time to travel around. Overall, including my journey back home via France and Germany to visit friends, I will have been to 8 different countries within 5 months.
Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall: was more expensive than at home.
Housing: was the same price as at home.
Telephone: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
For buying food you should go to "LIDL". Although fruits and vegetables are much cheaper there, the quality is much better at any other store. I decided to live a bit healthier and therefore spend more money on proper fruits/vegetables. You can get every kind of discounts when you go travelling, so make sure you have a student card!

FINAL COMMENTS

You can go to Riga, Tallinn and Stockholm really easily and cheap! Don´t miss that chance! There are also organized trips to Russia, which are all in all not really expansive at all...it´s a good opportunity to see St. Petersburg or Moscow.
