Women should never get a cab alone in any place of Mexico. Local public transportation is a disaster, but long distance bses are of high quality. Mexicans have a bitter sense of humour, which might offend some foreigners, but nonone should feel offended by their humour. Read Review

HOUSING
Personal assessment
Cost
KEY:
Couldn't have asked for more.
Pretty good.
Could've been better, but didn't lessen the overall experience.
Disappointing.
Facilities
Location
Cleanliness
Space
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I consider myself as an independent person. And in case of having a job I would prefer to live alone. I need space and freedom to concentrate fully on my tasks.
Personal comments:
It was an average housing, yet in a rather poorer part of the city. But the universtiy had little say in it.

Plenty to do when I had the time.
So-so.
Did not get involved.

Travel
Overall
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment
Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment
Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment
Personal comments:
To start with some tacos at Villa Santiago, next to school. But the Barrocco or the Barrio are the bests in the old city center.Plaza San Agustín and seeing one of the mercaditos are a must as well for foreigners.

ACADEMIC
My academic experiences
Quality of courses
KEY:
Fantastic.
Pretty good.
Could've been a bit better.
Disappointing.
Variety of courses
Availability/access to resources
Interaction with teachers
Interaction with other international students
Interaction with local students
Course recommendations:
Books are ardly aviable, and teachers often tend to forget that exchange students came to study not only to sit in silence at their courses.

My opinion of the university assessment
Exams at end of course
KEY:
Liked it.
It was alright.
A bit annoying.
Didn't like it.
Exams throughout the course
Essays and/or projects at the end of course.

Language difficulties
Social
KEY:
No problems.
I coped pretty well.
Sometimes it was difficult.
It was a constant struggle.
Educational
Administrative / Institutional
Overall
Language of instruction: Spanish
Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Spanish
How much did you improve your Spanish?
My level before: Did not speak it
My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang)
Personal comments:
At arriving I knew only two words, and now back in my hometown I teach spanish, so therefore I feel I learned it pretty well. It was an amazing experience, but a hard job as well to learn how to communicate with people from an other culture. Not only the language I had to learn but social and cultural rules and behaviours as well. University helped to et the academic knowledge, while friends and host family to get the rest.

EXPENSES
The accessibility of student needs
Second-hand text books
KEY:
Very easy.
Minimal effort.
Accessible but required effort.
Almost impossible.
Second-hand household items
Computers / Internet
Administrative
Money from home
Main source of funding:
Family
Other sources of funding:
scholarship from AFS
Work opportunities:
It was not legal for me to work
Personal spending habits:
I spent more because Monterrey is one of Mexico's expensivest cities. And all in all Hungary is much cheaper then Mexico.
Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall: was more expensive than at home.
Telephone, Housing: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Shopping for clothes and other such items is much better in southern areas of Mexico. Technical items on the other hand are better and cheaper on the North.
