Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I loved our apt. it was really nice and newly re-done. Though the didnt provide alot that we needed. IE cleaning supplies and towels, etc. We ended up spendign alot of money on top of the ungodly cost of the apt.
Personal comments:
Some people I know had apts that were reallly far from everything, btu we lucked out and got one right by the center, walking distance from school and the bars. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Travel: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Activities, Nightlife: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
We went to Campo di Fiore almost everynight. Lots of kids from the university would go over there, so you would meet up with other people. Some good places were Sloppy Sams and the Drunken Ship. The GrottaPinta was also a great after house place and Kaos etc. So many places to go to! A lot of the resident students and younger workers at the university would take us out. Definitely go on the Pub crawls, you go to so many places, and meet so many people! This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
They are really relaxed here. Courses I took were really easy. I hated English and Italian, but the film courses I took were Great!!! I learned alot and didnt have to worry about studying and working too hard.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
Just to warn you all, the administration is SOOOO unorganized and not so helpfull. Expect everything to be slow paced, and expect to figure everything out for yourself. Problems involved huge headaches trying to get the school to help. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Italian
Was learning Italian a key decision factor?
No, it wasn't. How much did you improve your Italian?
My level before: No problems in any areas (including slang) My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) Personal comments:
I minored in Italian so I had some background but living there is the best way to learn the language because there are many people that don't speak English and you are forced to communicate in Italian--which I thought was good. Once in a while there were times when I had trouble communicating. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

The accessibility of student needs

It was not legal for me to work Personal spending habits:
Well... I'm from Mississippi. There's not really that much of a comparison between what's available in Rome Italy and what one can find in the state of Mississippi. Yes...each has it's own specific culture and niceties but... I was not about to spare a dime more in that city than I could get away with. It was absolutely amazing. Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food, Travel, Telephone: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
Make sure you keep up with the exchange rates and what certain ATM's charge for withdrawals. Inform yourselves. My financial surprise occurred when in the beginning of one semester, my loan didn't come on time. I was broke and it was no joke. Luckily I was resourceful and bridged the gap until the funds were on my account. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

OVERALL

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
American University is a very expensive school from my standpoint. Without financial support from lenders it would not have been possible. As an artist... it's not which school you attended but the connections that you have that forward you along in life. Your ideas will always be your own. Universities can provide helpful solutions to getting your name out there...but it's not often enough that artists are in the right circles in order to succeed. Thus the struggling artists who after Grad school wishes he/she had spent the money otherwise and continued art as a side hobby. NOT ME.. it's all or nothing. In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
The Art Department in Rome isn't well coordinated with the Washington DC - American University location. I feel that if they are offering art classes they should be fully cooperative with the wishes and needs of hungry students who want more than just to sit and sip coffee at local bars and live the coveted artists life. FINAL COMMENTS
Please research and find out from other students who have studied your courses how they found the program. I feel that the Art program was one of the more difficult because unlike marketing...it's not all written out in black and white. Art must be lived and experienced. My saving grace was that I am a survivor. I've seen many give up and quit 3 semesters into the program...and failing to pick up the torch. Traveling tips... stay focused and don't get too wrapped up in extra curricular traveling. There will be plenty time for that after the study program is over. However...one must make certain decisions based upon one's willingness to succeed and financial background. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
