HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: On campus
Why? The most exciting thing was to live with 16 other international students, simply social live, possibility to make friends were the most important factors why I consider it a good place to live.
Personal comments:
Pretty good arranged, but there were two drawbacks: 1. I had to sign my contract with company WonenMiddenBrabant, which provides accommodation for foreign students on behalf of the university prior to see the room I was renting. They also arrange rooms for students outside the campus, so if you are not lucky, you will have to stay all period away from the campus. 2. The costs were much higher than for Dutch students for the same or even slightly worse type of accommodation, in my opinion too high. But overall it was pretty OK. STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
In the city town you have lots of things to do. You can go to many places to meet with friends. We used to go to a pub in the centre called Lamme Goedzak, where all the Erasmus parties were organised; there we met all the international people. We also went to the Cafe Bolle, to the Cafe Philip and many other pubs next to them in the centre of Tilburg. The ESN Tilburg could not be better, they organised really good events and parties for the Erasmus students. It was a great experience in a great city where I could learn more about the dutch culture and about many other cultures. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

LEARNING ENGLISH
by Blanca, Universidad de Deusto, Bilbao, Spain
Business Studies, Erasmus
Language difficulties
Language of instruction: English
Local language was: Different than language of instruction.
Was learning English a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my English Was learning the local language a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my knowledge How much did you improve your English?
My level before: At ease in most situations My level after: No problems in any areas (including slang) How much did you improve your local language?
My level before: Did not speak it My level after: Basic phrases Personal comments:
It is obvious that after one year as an Erasmus student I have improved my language and communication skills considerably. My english was good when I came to The Netherlands, but after my international study experience in this country I have no problems at all in any areas to speak in english. There are many factors that have helped me to improve my english. First of all I had all my courses in english in Tilburg University, I could learn a lot in all the classes and I had to study all the courses in english. Being surrounded by international people was also an important factor to improve my english. The Netherlands and Tilburg University have helped me to improve my communication and personal skills: I learnt more not only about english but also about other many cultures, and I am sure that all this can help me in my future professional career. EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
An ERASMUS grant Other sources of funding:
Family Personal savings Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
The prices are generally higher in the Netherlands and since I had the chance I travelled a lot in the Neteherlands. Food, Travel, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Nightlife: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
Lunch at the cantina (mensa) and dinner at home with itms bought on the supermarket. There are three supermaket chains clearly directed to different social economic customers. I recommend the Heida (do not recall very well if it is exactly this name) chain. If you want to travel in the netehrlands the railways are just amazing. They have special tickets that allow you to save a lot of money. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

I wish I had known...
Nothing. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
I think it is a great experience going to Tilburg. It has good teachers, a great library, excellent access to the internet and all the services at the University are very well organized. Dutch people are very nice. You will have also the chance to be ina interbnational environment and to know more about the Neteherlands and their culture. Go for it! FINAL COMMENTS
While in the Netherlands, use the train. I recommend you visit several palvces in the Netherlands, because it is worth it: Amsterdam, Utrecht, Maastricht, Roterdam, The Hague (Den Haag), you name it! Train is efficient and it takes you everywhere. There are special tickets that makes travelling not so expensive. If you want to go a little bit further, Belgium and Germany are right there, and Paris is not so far from Tilburg either. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
