HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: On campus
Arranged by: Home university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? an aparment is much cheaper than staying at the campus. that's why the last 2 months i stayed with two colleagues in an apartment and it's easy to get one.
Personal comments:
normally you get a single room with a bathroom in the international student building. the common kitchen is very small and has poor facilities. within few days you can get internet access if you apply for it. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students equally interact with the local and student community
Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Activities: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
the architecture cafe at the campus is very comfortable, there you also have internet access (wireless). many great night clubs such as mint & zapatas (every wednesday ladies night), windows, babyface. places to travel near shanghai: suzhou (zug 1 std), hangzhou (2 std), nanjing (3 std), and if you have more time you have to visit anhui (huangshan), yunnan, sichuan and xian, and of course the capital beijing. My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
all courses were taught in english, we had many presentations and some group works. depending on the year of your studies the courses are not that difficult, most of them i have already heard/learnt about at my home uni. normally it will be an open-book exam.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
i prefer individual works because you can arrange your time for prepariing by yourself and you are more indepentent. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Chinese
Was learning Chinese a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Chinese How much did you improve your Chinese?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
it is so much easier to learn a language when you are abroad and in contrast to my home university the language of instruction was also Chinese (much better!), because of the foreign students in the dormitory you can improve other languages easily, too This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Not specified Other sources of funding:
None Work opportunities:
I worked during my study abroad experience Personal spending habits:
Life in general is still a lot cheaper in China than in Europe or the US but if you want to you can spend extraordinarily big sums of money, too (if you don't speak the language Chinese might take advantage of that and charge higher prices!) Nightlife, Telephone: was more expensive than at home. Housing: was the same price as at home. Food, Travel, Overall: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Think about opening an account at a Chinese bank, for Germans the City Bank is a good advice for Shanghai This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
it's so easy and fast to find a nice apartment near university. In my opinion:
Most people loved it.
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
to have courses (taught in english) with more chinese students. FINAL COMMENTS
during the semester you won't have that much time to travel but you are allowed to miss courses. don't forget to take a guide of china with you, it's very helpful for organizing a trip. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
