Turku is the oldest city in Finland, with about 160 000 inhabitants and it is one of the bilingual cities in Finland, with a Swedish-speaking minority of 5%. In addition to the Turku School of Economics and Business Administration there are two other Universities (University of Turku and the Swedish speaking Åbo Akademi University), Colleges of commerce, nursing, navigation, engineering, arts and crafts and a number of general vocational schools, which make Turku the centre of education in the region. The Turku School of Economics and Business Administration provides research and higher education in the field of business science. The School carries out both basic and applied research, and offers graduate, postgraduate and continuing education. Expert services form an increasing part of the School's activities. The School was founded in 1950, on the initiative of local business circles. It started as a private institution, which was maintained by the Foundation of the Turku School of Economics. In 1977 the Turku School of Economics became a state institution and the role of Foundation changed from a maintainer to a supporter.
