HOUSING

Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - My choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? I think that, particularly for Americans who study abroad through a program, it's best to arrange your own housing to better benefit from having to function completely independently. You choose the location and with whom you live, and also have the freedom that is lacking with homestays.
Personal comments:
I found a group called EASO on the internet, they arrange a room in a flat for as long as you need it--if you arrange it early enough. You live with 10 or 12 people, usually internationals. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

STUDENT LIFE

Personal social experience
Describe host city: Student life dominates the city
Activities, Nightlife, Travel: Takes place mostly within the university/student environment Personal comments:
I am not actually a nocturnal creature but when I do go out, I frequently go to the movies. Bars failed to captivate my interest although I´ve been there more than once or twice. The Circulo de Bellas Artes, where experimental films are shown, is also a good find. Lately though, I discovered a cozy watering hole in Starbucks where I can read undisturbed and enjoy the international ambiance. The place is conducive to cerebral activities while savoring the tempting smell of coffee beans. I think it´s a haven for bookworms who wants to take life a little slower. My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Take subjects that you enjoy back home, regardless of whether thay may seem more difficult to follow. Your enthusiasm will make you want to understand.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
None. By not having exams I was able to choose enjoyable rather than easy courses and also had plenty of time to focus on my dissertation research. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Spanish
Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Spanish How much did you improve your Spanish?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
Having had studied for 4 years Spanish in highschool , when I arrived, I did understand much of what was being said. But the big problem was tot try to express myself. Hopefully, I lived with Spanish speakers and did not meet any French-speakers , which "condemed" me to speak it at all moments of the day. After a few months, thanks to these 2 factors and the classes being carried out in Spanish, I got much at ease in this language. It has been a wonderful experience to learn a language in this way. EXPENSES

The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Family Other sources of funding:
Government assistance An ERASMUS grant Work opportunities:
I didn't explore any work options Personal spending habits:
I send more because in the Netherlands I had a telephone contract which was cheaper, this is not possible here if you do not have residence permit and bankaccount, which takes months to get. Accomodation just is more expensive. ALso I spend more money because I feel that I have to make the most of being in Madrid so I don´t mind spending more to do fun things. Nightlife, Overall, Telephone, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Food, Travel: was the same price as at home.
Personal comments:
Mobile phone is very expenisve especially if you call people who use another network. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
I wish that I wouldn't have been so intimidated with speaking another language. You need to just jump in a go for it - you will never learn unless you are willing to make mistakes. In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
I would definately encourage anyone to go - you learn more about yourself during the experience than you ever will from a text book back home. FINAL COMMENTS
Be sure to take advantage of every chance you have to meet locals. Use common sense - but don't be afraid of being approached or approaching others. You may meet friends that will last a lifetime. This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself
