HOUSING
by Sarah, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom
International Relations, Erasmus
Personal assessment
Type of housing: Apartment/House
Arranged by: Independently - I had no other choice
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why? There is more choice of area, apartment type, who to live with etc. Gives you more independence.
Personal comments:
I did not see university housing as I rented an apartment independently. It was enjoyable although I rented with 2 English girls from my home university so I didn't get to practice very much Spanish at home! However, we were the only English people in the area and there we experienced typical Spanish life in respect to the local bars, shops and other facilities. Personal social experience
Describe host city: Students interact with the local community without much university involvement
Activities: Takes place mostly outside the university/student environment Nightlife, Travel: Takes place both within and outside of the university/student environment Personal comments:
What can I say? Madrid!Madrid! There's planty of night spots and in general places to go out and have fun!The best "night" spots are localizated through areas like: Malasaña, Plaza 2 de Mayo,Tribunal, Moncloa, Arguelles, Chueca, Santa Ana, Atocha, Sol, Gran Via, Latina...The list is endless! The place famous of it's cheap and delicious tapas is "Urgallo" near to Principe Pio metro station. The best place to have a coffe or churros con chocolate is for sure "San Gines" near to Opera metro station. My academic experiences
Course recommendations:
Do not settle; if the program or university does not have the courses that you feel would serve you best, keep researching.
My opinion of the university assessment
Personal comments:
I would suggest that local students take more time to welcome the international students as well as the international students not to be so "cliquish". This review is the opinion of an iAgora member, and not of iAgora itself

Language difficulties
Language of instruction: Spanish
Was learning Spanish a key decision factor?
Yes, I wanted to improve my Spanish How much did you improve your Spanish?
My level before: Everyday knowledge (shopping, directions, etc.) My level after: At ease in most situations Personal comments:
My main objectives/goals were to first improve my grammar, second, my vocabulary, and third, lose my american accent, [the first] two of which I have accomplished, and the last upon working fulltime with a telecommunications company that required me to speak spanish in a way that the hispanic clients could fully understand. If given the opportunity again, I would have attempted to make more connections with the locals which would have made my listening in class a lot easier. The accessibility of student needs
Main source of funding:
Government assistance Other sources of funding:
Family Personal savings Work opportunities:
I didn't want/need to work Personal spending habits:
More of less was because the dollar is a lot stronger than the Spanish Peseta. And I´m from California where most prices are inflated anyways. Food, Travel, Nightlife, Overall, Housing: was more expensive than at home. Telephone: was less expensive than at home.
Personal comments:
Well, housing in Madrid is inexpensive especially for a big city. I paid 200$ a month including utilities and furnishings for my flat. But internet cafes can eat your wallet up, especially if your an internet junkie like myself. But overall Spain is lightly less inexpensive than the US. Important to choosing this university...
I wish I had known...
someone from there to get insider tips right from the beginning In my opinion:
Everybody loved it, you will too!
During my experience abroad, I ...
Personal recommendation:
try to experience as much as possible!!! FINAL COMMENTS
if you want this experience to be the best time of your life - just let everything happen, don't expect or plan too much right from the beginning and - most important - spend time with local students as much as possible!!! you should be especially open to cultural differences in order to be able to really dive into madrid's life (some things work a lot more slowly in spain as you might be used to for example). i only travelled around madrid (to toledo for example) and to barcelona - travelling through spain is amazing, but i preferred staying in madrid with my friends there because 5 months isn't such a long time.
